Terrified of another spanking, Henry scrambled behind the passenger seat, clinging tightly to the back of his mother's chair while sobbing.
Mia quickly grabbed her furious husband's arm, trying to redirect his anger. "Honey, he's just a little kid, he doesn't know any better. Why don't you yell at me instead? I got into another fight. How much do you want to fine me this time?"
Andre glared at the pitiful, crying toddler, irritated by his rebellious streak. Even with such a tiny frame, the kid had a defiant attitude.
Henry didn't flinch under his father's terrifying gaze, staring right back with big, teary eyes.
Andre looked down at his wife's soft hands gripping his arm. "Mia, you drive." He was too angry right now. If this mother-son duo kept testing his patience, he might actually lose his temper and take it out on the kid since he couldn't bear to punish his wife.
Mia quickly unbuckled her seatbelt, glanced at the crying boy in the back, and swapped seats with her husband.
Knowing how to drive really came in handy, Mia thought to herself.
Seeing his parents switch places, Henry instantly let go of the passenger seat and scrambled over to hug the back of the driver's seat. As long as he was as far away from his dad as possible, he was safe.
Andre shot his son a look. The little boy immediately turned his head away, staring stubbornly out the window.
Halfway home, the crying finally stopped. A small, sniffly voice came from the backseat. "Mommy, Daddy, I'm hungry." He had been "working hard" in the office all morning, then spent the afternoon "bailing out" his mom. It was past lunchtime, and he hadn't eaten a thing.
Mia puffed out her cheeks. She hadn't eaten lunch either.
Andre scanned the road. "Change lanes and take the next right." He needed to feed his two troublemakers so they'd have enough energy to keep driving him crazy.
At the restaurant, Andre didn't say a word of reprimand to either of them.
Mother and son sat side-by-side, scarfing down their food like they were starved. Henry had grains of rice stuck all over his cheeks. Andre calmly wiped his face and served him more food.
Once the family of three was full, they headed back to the Cedillo estate.
Trying to score brownie points, Mia dragged her son into the kitchen to brew some tea. "Henry, throw in some extra chrysanthemum to help your dad cool off."
Henry grabbed handfuls of the dried flowers and tossed them in enthusiastically.
