Chapter 158 Caught Red-Handed

“And then… the beastfolk female must’ve been feeling herself a little too much. Thought he was shy, so she yanked off the clothes he’d wrapped her in and tried to throw herself at him again- all-”

“Throw herself at him? How, exactly?” Agares’s cold voice cut through from behind them, slicing right across Bane’s words. “General Nemoria, why don’t you explain it properly? I’m curious, too.”

The deputy generals around them silently stepped aside, forming two neat lines, eyes on their noses, noses on their hearts-each one hiding a gleeful you’re so dead in their gaze as they watched Bane.

Agares walked over unhurriedly, momentum rolling off him like a single man marching with the weight of ten thousand troops.

Bane’s scalp went numb. His body reacted before his brain did: heels together, legs straight, textbook salute. Then, in the very next heartbeat, he chose the “better you than me” route. “Reporting, Commander-there was nothing indecent. Ms. Feywin just doesn’t know much about the beastfolk and asked how they move so nimbly through the forest.

“I was explaining that sometimes their females outperform their males. No sordid details involved at all!”

Did she ask?

Her bargain-bin husband was a real piece of work.

Apparently, proximity corrupts; hang around him long enough, and you turn just as bad.

His subordinates were no saints either.

If that’s how they wanted to play it, she had no reason to be polite.

“I did not,” Sylvara said, lifting her hand to point squarely at Bane, washing her hands of it completely. “Bane only started talking because he thought we were tired from running. He said a beastfolk female once stripped naked and flopped into your arms to seduce you as a joke- just to lift everyone’s spirits.

“I thought it was very uplifting, personally. See? One juicy bit of gossip and boom-my cheeks are fine, my breathing’s fine, and now I only want to sit here, eat popcorn, and listen to gossip all day.”

Compete with her on being a little shit?

When she barks, no one out-dogs her.

Bane went silent.

Wait-wasn’t this gossip their fault to begin with?

He’d been correcting their misinformation.

How did the script flip like this?

Veyric was silent, too.

As expected of his Sylvie, her reversal game was god-tier. Beautiful move.

Everyone else was speechless.

No wonder she was family to the Hunting Legion.

She came with the built-in Legion trait of throwing teammates under the bus. Impressive.

Carlos let out a thoughtful little “oh” and, because the drama wasn’t big enough yet, gave the fallen man one more kick while he was down. “So, there was gossip about Mr. Vaelor? General Nemoria, why didn’t you ever tell us? Looking down on us or what?”

Bane was stumped.

Would it still be in time if he just lay down and died right now?

“Yeah, the gossip isn’t finished yet.” Sylvara’s pitch-black gaze swept over Agares, carrying a hint of open provocation. “Bane, go on. What exactly did your Mr. Vaelor do with that pretty little female in his arms?”

Bane’s face went through every shade on the color wheel.

He frantically blinked at her, begging for mercy.

He wanted to kneel and beg her to stop talking.

He really couldn’t withstand Agares’s wrath.

Sylvara ignored him. Her eyes sparkled, bright as the sharpest star in the night sky, even the moon paling next to her.

“General Nemoria.” Agares’s chiseled face stayed perfectly blank, his voice flat as ever.

Bane answered, voice already shaking, “Yes, sir, Mr. Vaelor!”

Agares’s sharp gaze locked on him. “No mecha. March on foot. Head west and clear the path.”

Bane’s tears could only swirl in his eyes.

This vicious little girl, plus that vicious little cadet-total poison. They were the ones who’d demanded the gossip, and all he’d done was correct it to protect Agares’s reputation.

“Yes-”

“Ah!”

Veyric’s sudden shriek cut off his response. He darted to Sylvara’s side, thrusting his optical computer under her nose. “Strategy Department just sent another message. The anomaly we’re supposed to capture is retreating west at ten o’clock. Current headcount: around forty.”

Sylvara lifted her own optical computer and glanced at it. Hers was set to silent-no vibration, no notification tone.

She checked the message, then stepped forward, blocking Veyric with one arm and lifting her optical computer toward Agares, waving the screen. “Your Highness Agares, congratulations. Blake just designated you as the biggest anomaly in this entire training exercise. All 310,000 people now get bragging rights if they manage to catch you.”

Agares’s dark eyes flickered, a shooting-star smile streaking briefly across his lips. “They’ll take pride in catching me? They’d better be capable of doing it first.”

Holy-

A confident man’s hormones really do go off like a bomb.

The blast hit Sylvara’s poor old heart dead center, pounding in her chest.

Behind her, Veyric quietly slid a hand toward his laser gun, mind spinning. If he fired an empty round dead center at his idol’s chest right now… did that count as a free win?

Agares’s gaze slipped past Sylvara and landed on Veyric’s hand on his weapon. He turned slightly and issued a calm, clear order to his deputy generals. “Full camouflage. From this moment on, during our time on this planet, if you encounter any instructor, freshman, or upperclassman, don’t hold back. General Nemoria, you’re carrying out the order. You lead the

way.”
