Thirty-something fully grown men answered in unison, loud and solid, “Yes, sir!”

Bane echoed the response, then immediately dug into his spatial button, pulled out a pack of field-camouflage paint, and smeared his entire face in one swipe, which he then tossed the paint toward the others, and shot west like a greased bullet.

One after another, the rest rubbed streaks of camouflage across their faces. With their combat suits covered in dust and their faces now painted up, they were completely unrecognizable.

Agares didn’t treat himself differently just because he was Commander. He also pulled out camouflage paint, lifted his hand, and began streaking it across his face.

“Commander, you’re hurt?” Veyric suddenly poked his head out from behind Sylvara and squinted. “Was it that mortar from earlier? Did it hit your hand?”

Not only did Agares pause, but every one of his men turned toward him, eyes widening, disbelief flashing across their faces. Their Commander-injured by a mortar? And these mortars were modernized. Strong, but not that strong.

Who was this kid trying to fool?

“You saw wrong. His Highness Agares’s hand is fine.” Sylvara took one long step forward and, before Agares could dodge, she grabbed his hand, slid her palm down his, then lifted it high like she was presenting evidence. “See? Not a scratch. Veyric, are you blind?”

Veyric rubbed his eyes hard. He could’ve sworn he saw thin cuts earlier, little beads of blood rising up. How on earth did it disappear?

Did he really just hallucinate?

“You’re definitely blind.” Sylvara dropped Agares’s hand, smacked Veyric’s arm, and barked, “Go after Bane. You’re one of the forty people the Strategy Department labeled as an ‘anomaly.’ You’re part of this circus, too.

“Stick close, don’t get caught, and don’t get hit by those blank rounds. Go!”

Veyric straightened like someone had injected a shot of espresso straight into his bloodstream. He adjusted his backpack, lowered his voice, and whispered, “Okay, I’ll go open the path. You stay with my idol-the Commander—and the moment you get a chance, take down that Eagle. We’ll win the whole thing.”

Sylvara couldn’t stop the tiny laugh that escaped. She lifted her foot to kick him—

But the deputy generals arrived just in time. Leiya yanked Veyric by the collar. “Come on, little

A reward? Veyric’s eyes lit up like a starving wolf spotting fresh meat. He tore free from Leiya’s grip and bolted ahead with a wild whoop. “Deal!”

The deputy generals stared.

So, this little cadet really had world-class escaping skills.

They all sped up to chase him.

With everyone gone, Agares glanced down at his hand once more, then stepped toward Sylvara. “Ms. Feywin-”

Sylvara spun around, flashing a bright, trouble-making smile that cut him off. “Your Highness Agares, since you won’t fight me, then let’s compete another way. Let’s see who can collect more freshmen’s chief badges and nameplates before training ends.

“Three-day limit. If I win, you take back what you said about me not having the awareness of a Hunting Legion family member. You’ll apologize. And you’ll stop mentioning divorce to your wife. Deal?”

Agares’s dark eyes dipped into something deep. After a short silence, he said, “If I win, you will persuade my wife to divorce me. How does that sound?”

Sylvara arched a brow. Her black eyes gleamed with fierce certainty. She held up her hand. “Deal. High-five to seal it. Whoever breaks it is a bastard.”

Agares stared at the pale hand in front of him, then raised his own and slapped a crisp, sharp high-five.

Sylvara pulled her hand back and turned to leave, only for her bargain-bin husband’s cool wooden voice to sound behind her. “Ms. Feywin, keeping one’s word is the most basic quality of a person.”

“Even if someone breaks a promise, it doesn’t turn them into a bastard. At most, they deserve blame from the person they promised. Therefore you do not need to insult anyone.”

Sylvara was silent for a moment.

Who was insulting him?

Did this man understand humor at all?

“Fine.” She turned, bared her teeth in a grin. “Let me be clear then-I’m not accidentally insulting you. I’m deliberately insulting you. You’re a jerk. A bastard!”

Agares blinked once. Even with camouflage all over his face, he radiated pure solemnity. “It is unhealthy to suppress anger. If expressing it helps, then do so.”

And with that, he stepped past her and walked west in long, steady strides.

Sylvara watched his straight, soldierly silhouette disappear into the trees and let out an amused exhale.

He was a late-stage, terminally clueless macho man-textbook case. Please-she’d survived zombies on ancient Earth and spent her downtime looting entire libraries.

She’d read whole shelves of romance, love, heartbreak, triumph. There was no way she couldn’t conquer a man with zero EQ and only IQ.

Just you wait, she thought.

I’ll make you kneel and call me Daddy.

Across the planet, every freshman in the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth batches received the broadcast. They opened their maps. All routes pointed west.

Ten thousand instructors perked up instantly, rolled their shoulders, loaded their weapons, and headed west, too.

The upperclassmen-already closer to the western forest-didn’t bother to hide anymore. They raised their guns and began sweeping the woods for the forty “anomalys.”

Untouched, wild, primeval forest stretched ahead.
