“I asked you first.” Blake weighed the long knife in his hand, flipping it like he might cut someone at any moment. “There’s an old saying that goes: first come, first served. We ought to keep that fine tradition alive, don’t you think? The princess consort of the Empire!”
Sylvara suddenly broke into a smile, her eyes curving in delight as she spoke like she was calling checkmate on a chessboard. “You’re absolutely right. So, tell me, should I call you Blake, or should I call you my dear sister-in-law?”
Want to compete with her in shamelessness? If she wanted, she could roast herself harder than anyone.
Especially when it came to exposing secrets.
She wasn’t afraid of Blake. Not at all.
Blake froze, the corner of her mouth quirking up. “What kind of answer is that? Couldn’t you just call me General Kenobia?”
Sylvara shrugged with wide-eyed innocence. “You’re right. So couldn’t you just call me Sylvara?”
“You cunning girl.” Blake’s violet eyes glimmered with interest. “Is it fun messing with Prince Agares?”
She shot back, “You sly old fox, is it fun messing with the entire Empire?”
Blake swung her knife, trimming the tip of a leaf from the branch. She sighed, “Looks like we’re not going to get anywhere with words. You won’t answer my question, I won’t answer yours. How about rock, paper, scissors? Whoever loses answers the winner’s question. Deal?”
If there was a list of weirdos in the royal family, Blake would be at the top.
Rock, paper, scissors?
Seriously, who even thinks of that in a situation like this?
Sylvara’s eyes drifted to the tip of the leaf Blake had just cut. It was perfectly even, about three-quarters of an inch long.
She nodded firmly. “That’s a great idea. Rock, paper, scissors is classic, gets the job done.”
“So here’s the deal. Before we play, can you put down that knife? Seeing you with it freaks me out. I’m so nervous my hands are shaking.”
Blake hefted the nearly four-foot-long knife in her hand “This? It’s just a toy. It looks tough, but it’s not. What are you afraid of?”
She was using the knife to threaten her!
And she asked her what was she afraid of!
She was scared she’d hack her to bits with that knife-wat else?
“I’m afraid of dying.” Sylvara patted her chest and glanced at Blake’s neck, sizing her up and wondering. Was she just a cross-dresser or simply in disguise? No Adam’ apple, no chest. Did she really have to strip her down to confirm?

“Afraid of dying?” Blake’s violet eyes sparkled. “If you’re o scared, why are you staring at me so hard? Do I have something on my face, or are you just dying to check if I have abs under here?”
The way she said it was way too bold.
Sylvara choked and started coughing hard, her face flushing red.
Blake, who’d caused her to choke, just kept going, unbothered. “If you want to look, just say so. I wouldn’t mind. We’re family, aren’t we? No need to let some outsider get the benefit.
“So, you want to see? I can strip for you right here. There’s no one around here to bother us. I’ll give you a good look.
“But I’ll say this first. You can look all you want, make comments even, but no touching.”
Who the heck would want to touch her?
This was her husband’s teacher?
Was she messing with her or what?
How did a shameless person like this ever end up with a student like Agares, who’s so rigid and uptight that he barely say a word?
She had real doubts.
Serious doubts.
This person spouting nonsense in front of her was the most difficult opponent she’d ever met. But wow, it was almost too much fun.
Sylvara stopped coughing, stepped back on the branch, and sat down like she was inviting her. “Go on then, strip. Once you’re done, we’ll play rock, paper, scissors. The loser answers the question. Come on, get to it!”
Blake twirled the knife, and a layer of white frost appeared at the tip. “Sweetheart, you’re awfully eager!”
Sylvara flashed her a sharp, toothy grin, pure innocence in her eyes. “How am I eager? It’d be a shame to miss a free show.
“Come on, let’s hurry before anyone else shows up. After you put on the show, we’ll play the game, right?”
Trying to out-dirty-talk her? Like she’d back down. Who was trapping whom now?
Blake smirked, and the frost on the knife tip suddenly turned into six snowflakes shooting straight at Sylvara.
Sylvara spun, dodging all six snowflakes, and jumped three steps back, looking her up and down before making her pronouncement. “Looks like you’re not Blake. You’re my dear sister-in-law.”
“My dear sister-in-law’s body is reserved for His Majesty not for me. I get it. No need to strip after all.”
Blake was definitely a woman disguised as a man, that was for sure.
Initially, Sylvara really started thinking she was a male cross-dresser who had gone through all kinds of melodrama with Kind Relos before ending up together.
