Chapter 219 A One-Month Deal

A baby, once born, should grow into a person someday.

Wait-no. This isn’t right.

Sylvara froze at the sound coming from her wrist-scree and asked, “Hey, tell me the truth. Is your little one never going to turn human? Is that why you’re hiding it

Blake went quiet for a moment. She didn’t answer directly. It almost sounded like she had silently confirmed that suspicion. Blake finally said, “Sweetheart there’s an old saying from ancient Earth: Take out the roof, and the house freezes. If the royal family falls, no one in the empire can truly protect you.”

Sylvara had always thought she was good with words.

But Blake? Blake was a world-class smooth talker.

If she dropped Blake in Hesperia, he’d become the top leader of some wild pyramid scheme by tomorrow morning.

“Right now, only a handful of people know the truth about you,” Blake continued. “And I can keep all of them under control. No matter how much trouble you cause in the empire, even if you bring the sky down, I can cover for you.”

Sylvara thought for a second, then said, “Fine. Let’s work together for one month. Let me see how sincere you really are.”

“Deal.” Blake answered so fast she sounded scared Sylvan might change her mind. “Good luck winning first place in this military training. I hope your future shines bright. Goodbye.”

She cut the call before Sylvara could say another word.

Sylvara stared at the blank screen, then looked ahead.

Veyric kept glancing back every few steps, worried she might fall behind.

Sylvara opened Agares’s contact information and casually called him.

Agares had returned to Kolar planet. After spending the day at the training field, he finally went back to his

room near sunset.

On the table sat a big package. The address said it came from the Fifth Military Academy.

The date was four days ago, right before his newly registered wife left for military training.

He opened the box. Inside were bakery, dessert, and a familiar little note. When he reached for the note, his device buzzed.

Agares pulled back his hand. He didn’t touch the note again. Instead, he sat down, lifted the device, and saw the caller ID. His wife was calling.

He hesitated, then tapped answer. A soft, sweet, slightly playful voice floated out, “Honey, if I ever get in trouble, will you cover for me?”

Agares’s hand tightened slightly on his knee. His voice was firm and cold. “I’ve already made my intentions clear. As long as we are married, I am your guardian.”

See? People say a tough, straight-laced man can’t be sweet.

But that line? Beautiful. A guardian. If she got in trouble he would take the hit for her. Unlike Blake, who said a million things, and each one felt unreliable.

Sylvara’s mood brightened. Even her voice turned soft and sweet. “Honey, if I ever got into a fight with your sister-in-law, how big of a crime would that be?”

Agares’s calm, emotionless voice came through the device. “If you fight her, it counts as a family dispute. Not a crime. As your guardian, I will protect you so she can’t hurt you.”

“PA”

Sylvara couldn’t hold back a laugh.

Straight men really had the funniest charm.

It hit her right in the heart.

When she finished laughing, she coughed lightly, like a spoiled kid asking for candy. “What if Her Majesty insists on blaming me for something?”

Hearing her laughter, Agares frowned on the other side of the call. His tone grew even more serious. “Her Majesty has a noble rank, but if she insists on placing the blame, then she is breaking the law. You will not be harmed.”

Sylvara blinked. “Why?”

His wife was a little slow sometimes.

Agares softened his tone and explained in a steady and clear voice, “She joined the royal family before you did. She is also one of the chief prosecutors of the Supreme Court. If she fights you and then pursues charges afterward, she would be abusing her knowledge of the law. She would be knowingly breaking it.”

Wow!

Blake really could do anything.

She could disguise herself as a man in a suit, take down bandits, fight Swarmborn, and serve as a high general.

In a dress, she could be the Empress and a Chief Prosecutor.

She truly lived up to the saying.

Blake has the brains to rule an empire and the strength to defend it.
