Sylvara looked at Aslan with a half-smile. “Aslan, come on. You can tell me, besides being a high general and the empress, what other noble title does Blake have? If something happens, why do I, the princess-consort, have to go down with her?”

He had just calmed down a little, but his face changed again. He spun around and ran for his life. “I don’t know anything! Don’t ask me!” He shouted while sprinting away.

Sylvara shouted after him, “You can run now, but you still have to go back to the academy! If you show up there, you’re done for!”

He tripped at her threat, almost falling flat, but caught himself and sprinted even faster.

In just a few seconds, he was gone.

Sylvara lowered her gaze and looked toward Veyric, who was waiting for her up ahead. She waved for him to keep moving.

Veyric heard the broadcast earlier. He had a whole storm of questions in his head, but Sylvara wanted him to lead the way, so he swallowed every question and kept walking.

Sylvara was itching to figure out Blake’s true identity. She was just about to call Agares when a strange number lit up her optical computer.

She instantly used her mental energy to seal the area, blocking any sound from leaking out. Then she answered the call.

Blake’s soft, amused voice floated through. “Sweetheart, are you getting close to the finish line?”

Sylvara wasn’t surprised at all. “Yeah. About a mile and a half left. Why? Planning to warn the people waiting there?”

Blake laughed. “Why would I warn them? I can handle losing. You already took me out. Keeping me around won’t help them now.”

“Really? Woah, buddy, that’s a surprise.” When Sylvara called someone buddy, it meant she saw them as an opponent, never family. She didn’t care one bit about Blake rank or title.

“We’re the same, you know,” Blake said with a small smile. “You have things you want to hide. I have things I want to hide. You can’t expose me, and I can’t expose you.

“When it comes to the lab, you’re scared, and so am I. So, sweetheart, how about we stop tearing off each other’s masks and just be one loving family, okay?”

Even this snake was afraid of being dragged into a research lab.

She was offering Sylvara an olive branch.

Sylvara’s eyes shifted. “One last question.”

Blake was trying to make peace, so of course she didn’t efuse. “Ask.”

“What exactly are you?” Sylvara asked.

“You already guessed it. Why ask again?” Blake replied without hesitation.

Sylvara had guessed. Blake wasn’t human.

A non-human who could carry a baby.

That meant Blake was some kind of highly evolved, unknown species.

“I hope you mean what you said,” Sylvara continued. “We stop exposing each other, and when needed-*

Before she could finish, Blake cut her off. “When needed, I’ll cover for you. But sweetheart, you don’t have to worry so much. You’re the princess consort. Other than your family, Aslan, Relos, and me, no one knows

the truth.

“Your family used you as a substitute bride. They know they’re in the wrong, so they’ll stay quiet. As for Aslan, don’t worry. With me around, he won’t say a word to anyone-including Agares.

“And Relos? Relax. He’s the last person who wants Agares to divorce and lose you. Unless you walk up to Agares and tell him you’re his wife, I promise no one will tell him.

“So, sweetheart, you don’t need to hide everything. Show one ability openly. Stand tall. If something really happens and Agares can’t protect you. I will.”

Blake was offering to shield her?

Sylvara almost laughed. If they really fought, Blake couldn’t beat her.

And she had the nerve to say something so bold.

Interesting.

Blake must’ve had another identity, one that outranked the emperor.

“Buddy, are you sure you’re offering to protect me,” Sylvara said with a cold little laugh, “and not just trying to bait me, hoping to see what I’m capable of? And you’re a top soldier. A top soldier is like a top hunter- best at making enemies relax, lowering their guard, and then wiping them out.”

Blake had skills.

But she also had fears.

For example, she was terrified of being sent to a lab.
