The team heard they were the first to reach the finish line. They cheered, shouted, and started cursing. “I got first place! I didn’t even beat the person who took down the commander, but this still feels fucking amazing!”

“Finally, I can take a shower. I haven’t touched water in most 20 days. This isn’t training! This is torture!”

“I want a huge meal. I’m going to buy some fresh fruit. In done with these nutrition packs. They make me want to throw up.”

“I told you the First Military Academy would never lose o the Fifth. No way those losers could beat my idol.”

Sylvara heard all their cheering, complaining, and bragging. She tapped her baton on the table-three sharp crack crack crack sounds. “Everyone, you didn’t register yet. If you’re not registered, you didn’t win. So maybe don’t celebrate too early.”

Her reminder hit them like cold water.

The six snapped back to their senses. They rushed to the table and scrambled to sign the form, writing their academy, department, and how many nameplates and badges they collected.

Beside the table were two big baskets made of Smokewillow branches for storing the nameplates and badges.

They didn’t overthink it. They tossed every badge and nameplate they had into the baskets.

Metal hit wood with a loud clanking noise, a sound that felt strangely satisfying.

Veyric tried his best to hold his face stiff and pinched his thigh so he wouldn’t burst out laughing.

He lowered his voice on purpose and said to the students who had just turned everything in. “Congrats, everyone. As the first group to arrive, you’ll be the pride of our empire. Out of 310,000 students in this training, you’re the luckiest one.”

Hearing an instructor praise them made every one of them beam with pride. “Thank you, Instructor!” they said together.

“You’re welcome!” Sylvara ordered, “Attention! Left turn March!”

All six straightened their backs, turned left, and marched five steps forward. “Attention!” Sylvara called again. “Look right. Congratulations, soldiers! Let’s welcome the second group arriving now.”

All six looked right, eyes bright with excitement.

The second group was seven students from the First Military Academy. They came stumbling in, dirty and exhausted, but running toward the finish line.

The first group gave them huge, smug grins, showing of that they were the first ones there.

Sylvara made the second group follow the same steps. Register, and toss all their badges and nameplates into the basket.

Once both groups, all 13 students, had removed all their gear, Sylvara led them to a huge tent behind the

area to rest.

The students glanced at each other, thrilled. Just as they thought-first and second place get special treatment. Look! A private rest tent!

Inside the tent were hammocks, clean drinking water, and fresh clothes.

As soon as they stepped in, they relaxed completely, dropping their guard the moment they sank into the hammocks.

Sylvara waited at the door for a moment. Then she pulled a machine gun from her spatial button, aimed at the tent, and opened fire without holding back.

The loud booming sounds echoed through the camp. No one inside escaped.

Everyone was “shot” and covered in red smoke.

Sylvara walked around to the back of the tent, lifted the fabric, and shouted inside, “You’re dead. Hurry up and get out.”

All the “dead” students rushed out. The moment they stepped into the open, they froze. Not far away, a long row of instructors in uniforms sat on the ground waving at them in perfect sync. “Welcome to the club,” the instructors said together. “We’re dead too.”

“What on earth?”

“Who got taken out? Isn’t this the finish line?”

“You’re ambushing us at the finish line? Seriously?”

Boom-boom-boom-boom!

Sylvara fired another round of blanks at them and warned coldly, “Dead people don’t talk. If you keep talking, I’ll make sure you stay ‘dead.’ Go find yourselves a quiet corner and squat.”

Two teams. 13 people. Every face full of anger and frustration. But getting hit by the training blanks meant “death,” and rules were rules.

No one dared to fight back despite their unwillingness.

They walked over to the instructors and squat down beside them.

Those “dead” instructors watched them settle in and began offering the most unhelpful comfort possible.

“Take it easy, cadets. We’ve been dead for about 20 days. You’re new. You’ll get used to it.”

“Winning and losing is normal. Just try again next round. And stop making that gloomy dead-face-it’s bad

luck.”
