Chapter 282 The People Decide.

When Ozark finished speaking, Sylvara smiled. Her smile was bright and sunny, innocent and harmless. “I don’t know what a citizen mandate is,” she said lightly. “But Imperial Law gives the people that right.”

“Yes,” Blake said calmly, stepping in at the right moment. “As long as the Supreme Court drafts the proposal and Emperor Vaclor signs it, every citizen of the Empire can vote under the Citizen Mandate.” She looked straight at Ozark. “Councilor Ozark, you said the people don’t understand increases or cuts in the military budget. That’s fine. The military will prepare a clear report. Charts, numbers, and plain explanations. We’ll publish it on Starnet for everyone to see.

“When they’ve watched it and understood it, they’ll naturally know what a funding increase is. And they’ll know how to vote.”

“You ass… !”

Sylvara’s smile and Blake’s calm words stabbed straight into Ozark’s chest.

He had ruled the Assembly for years.

When he disagreed, no one dared to act. No one had ever challenged him like this.

And now, a father and daughter were stepping on him in front of everyone.

“What about us?” Sylvara cut him off coolly. Her smile vanished. Her eyes turned sharp as ice as she swept her gaze across the Elder Council. “So the Elder Council stands united with the Assembly and refuses to increase the military budget. Very well. You are all very brave.

“I admire that bravery. Next, I ask all of you to stay right here in the Council Hall. Don’t go anywhere. I will notify the Anti-Corruption Division, the Audit Division, the Tax Authority, and the Prosecutor’s Office. A joint task force will be formed immediately.

“I sincerely hope none of you have evaded taxes. I hope your families have no massive spending that exceeds your legal income.

“And I hope every step on your résumés, every promotion that brought you here, was earned fairly, cleanly, and without fear of investigation,”

Blake’s hands tightened on the armrests of her chair. She sat up straight, staring at Sylvara in shock.

OMG! Just how amazing can she get?

First, she could recite Imperial Law from memory.

Now, she could strike like this-clean, sharp, and deadly.

The members of the Elder Council and the Assembly were all nobles or powerful elites. Deep down, they believed in rigid class lines.

They believed that ordinary people without mental energy or with low levels of it were trash. Even if they weren’t destroyed, they deserved nothing more than life on waste worlds or barren planets. In their eyes, only those with high mental energy levels were worthy of equal rights as citizens.

If Agares hadn’t risen to the position of Commander over the past few years, earning overwhelming respect from the people, the Elder Council, and the Assembly, they would have already dragged this class divide into the open. They would have openly split citizens into those with mental energy and those without and challenged the emperor head-on.

This time, Sylvara had struck straight at their weak point.

Let every department investigate them.

Brilliant!

Absolutely perfect.

“You-”

“Shh!”

Sylvara raised her index finger to her lips, signaling for silence. Her cold gaze swept across the Elder Council and the Assembly. Then she sat back down. “Don’t talk,” she said flatly. “Talking means begging. Begging means I’d have to hit you. Hitting you would dirty my hands. I don’t want to hit you, and I don’t even want to look down on you.”

Getting hit and looked down on was still better than being jailed for bribery and corruption.

The people in the room hesitated.

They exchanged looks. One person picked up a pen.

Then another did the same. Soon, the others followed. One by one, they signed the military budget increase form.

After signing, they lined up like cowards. Each person held the signed document with both hands and passed it to Sylvara with deep respect.

Ozark felt a lump choke in his throat. His eyes bulged red with rage and shock. He had not expected them to turn on him so fast.

Sylvara looked at him. A slow, mocking smile curled at her lips. She ignored the document being handed to her. Instead, she lifted her right hand and snapped her fingers.

Traze hurried forward. This time, the Elder Council respectfully handed the form to him.

The Four-Party Meeting.

Three votes in favor of increasing the military budget. One against. Whether the Assembly agreed no longer mattered.

Blake stood up. Her combat boots struck the floor as she walked over. She gave Sylvara a knight’s salute, then reached out with a confident, flirtatious smile. “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s go.”

Sylvara placed her hand in hers. Blake pulled her up with ease and tucked her arm into her

own.

The Elder Council members finally let out a quiet breath of relief. They had signed. The meeting was over. Everything should be fine now.

No audits. No investigations. No visits from the Anti-Corruption Division. Just as they thought that, Blake stopped after a few steps. She turned her head slightly and looked down at the crowd with cold authority.

“Everyone stay where you are,” she said. “I’ve already notified the Anti-Corruption Division, the Tax Division, and several other departments. They’ll be here within thirty minutes to verify your identities and begin the family-based investigations,” she added. “If anyone leaves,” Blake continued calmly, “it will be treated as refusal to cooperate or proof of corruption.”

“Blake, you’re abusing your power!” Ozark snapped. Fear and anger flooded his voice. He had not expected her to take action against them. “If we’re all investigated, do you really think you’re clean? Everyone had done something shady before.”
