“You want my contact number? For what?” Sylvara snapped. “So you can track my home? Find my family? Just like that Idiotus who dragged me out before, trying to use my family to threaten me?”

“I’m telling you right now,” she said sharply. “I won’t give it to you, so drop it.”

Agares lifted his left hand slightly. Auren stepped forward, smiling in a way that felt far too familiar and far too fake. “Miss,” Auren said gently, “a single contact number can keep you safe from threats. This is just a routine check. Nothing more.”

“If you’re worried,” he added, “I can give you my contact information. I can also explain my job-”

“Why should I?” Sylvara cut him off, her voice high and piercing. Giving him that number would expose her Feywin cover completely. Once that was blown, everything would collapse. “Under Imperial law,” she said firmly, “a contact number is private information. If a citizen refuses, they don’t have to provide it.”

Did the law really say that?

Sylvara had no idea.

She was bluffing.

Agares slowly lowered the hand fitted with his optical computer. He stood tall and straight. “Since you want to talk about Imperial law,” he said calmly, “then we’ll handle this by Imperial law.

“According to Imperial Law, Article 508,” he continued, unlawful invasion of personal information is prohibited. However, if a citizen is suspected of a crime law enforcement has the right to access personal information. Right now, I-”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Three rapid knocks hit the door, cutting him off.

Agares tilted his body and looked toward the door.

Sylvara forced her racing heart to settle and let out a breath so faint it was barely visible. Her eyes locked on the door.

Auren moved quickly and pulled it open.

Two officers in uniforms stood outside, holding up their badges. “Hello,” one of them said. “We received a report that someone here is involved in illegal human trafficking.”

It was the police.

Sylvara felt like she’d just grabbed a lifeline. She shot her hand into the air. “Me! It was me!” she said quickly. “I was almost sold. Me. I was the victim.”

She rushed toward the door before anyone could stop her.

One officer looked her up and down. “What’s your name?”

Sylvara stepped forward without hesitation. “Margot Thornton,” she said smoothly.

“Ms. Thornton,” the officer said in a firm voice, “since you were nearly trafficked, you’ll need to come with us

to give a statement. You’ll also need to describe the people involved and help with visual identification.”

Sylvara nodded fast. “Okay. Okay.”

“I’ll go with you,” Agares suddenly volunteered. He stepped toward the door. The pressure he carried was overwhelming, the kind that made refusal feel impossible.

Sylvara cursed silently.

What was this bargain-bin husband trying to do now?

He’d already checked the optical computer. Was he still hot satisfied?

Once they got to the station, they would definitely run ilentity checks.

And once they did, she was toasted.

No. This was bad. She had to find a way to run.

The five of them entered the elevator together.

Down they went, out of the hotel.

Only one aircraft was waiting. It couldn’t carry all five people.

Agares spoke again. “You two go ahead. I’ll follow behind with her.”

The way he spoke―steady, commanding-made people trust him without thinking.

The officers nodded politely. “Then we’ll leave her to you.”

Agares glanced at Sylvara. “Not a problem, Ms. Thornton. After you.”

So afraid she might escape, huh?

Sylvara’s eyes darted around as she studied the road. The street was bright as day. Hotels lined both sides, mixed with all kinds of shops. Aircraft were parked along the curb.

If she tried to run, there was nowhere to hide. No cover No alleyways.

She was done for.

No. If she didn’t give up, nobody could make her.

“Alright,” Sylvara answered Agares. She pointed at the other door of the aircraft. “I’ll sit on that side. You sit

here.”

She walked toward the other side of the aircraft. Her steps grew faster and faster. She was already several steps away from her bargain-bin husband and about to break into a run.

Suddenly, a powerful, crushing wave of mental energy wrapped around her ankle.

Sylvara’s heart jolted. She barely had time to react.
