Chapter 108
When Alpha Hendricks was in one of his moods it was easy for Benedict to wrangle his wolf with the reminder that an Alpha’s word was law Following an Alpha meant supporting his every decision, regardless of one’s own personal opinion or feelings on the matter. What would he, a Beta, know about leading a pack? What right did he have to question his Alpha?
Beatrice was to be their Luna, which meant her authority would be equal to the Alpha’s. Just because they haven’t completed the mate bond didn’t change that simple fact that meant keeping his wolf in check.
By the time Benedict’s wolf finally calmed down, the human had retreated back into the room, the door as closed as it could be with the damage he’d
caused.
He was suppose to make sure the door was locked from the outside to prevent her escape – but now it couldn’t be locked at all. That meant Benedict
settled in to stand guard. Sure, he could assign a lower ranked wolf to do this but it was his fault it had to be done and therefore his responsibility It was
also a good excuse to avoid Alpha Hendricks for a while.
Beatrice had rejected him yet again, which meant the Alpha was off destroying something outside. Probably a tree. Possibly another wolf if someone was
stupid enough to ask what was wrong. Or, maybe, he’d made it to the training grounds and would blow off steam like a normal person this time.
Benedict let out a low sigh. This whole thing was such a mess. For a fated mate to so blatantly oppose the bond was unheard of, especially when it was with an Alpha. He wondered what he would do if, when he found his own fated mate, she rejected him like Beatrice had done to Hendricks.
No, that wouldn’t happen. For starters, he wouldn’t kidnap her like an idiot. Benedict stopped his train of thought there, shaking his head. Alpha Hendricks wasn’t an idiot; he was desperate, that’s all. He was halfway through his twenties, an age when other Alphas had both found their fated mates and had some pups; he was just impatient to have that for himself.
Benedict was also beginning to feel impatient. Waiting for one’s fated mate was what the higher ranked wolves did; the strength that came from the bond, from having the perfect mate, couldn’t be compared to its counterpart – the chosen mate’s. It was only acceptable as a last resort, and even then only
barely.
The sound of footsteps brought the Beta out of his pensive state to see Alpha Donovan’s daughter was walking towards him.
Avery was a tall woman, lean but powerful, and striking in appearance. Her skin was as dark as her father’s and she always wore bright colours to accentuate it; she wasn’t one to hide behind others, preferring to stand front and center. “Beta Benedict,” she greeted him with a curt nod. “What brings you here The she-wolf trailed off when she caught sight of the damage he’d caused. “I see. I’ve heard she has… an interesting personality.”
“That’s one way of putting it,” he grumbled, trying to ignore his guilt at damaging another Alpha’s property. Not that he couldn’t afford to pay to get it repaired; he just didn’t want anyone to mistake it for disrespect. That would be a huge problem, one he didn’t have the eggy to deal with on top of everything else.
“I’m going to see what I can do,” Avery told him with a small smile. “It probably won’t be much but, maybe hearing things from a high ranking the wait will give her a different perspective.”
