BEATRICE
Tweedledick eventually left without saying another word At least Beatrice didn’t have a babysitter anymore that had been too much. Alone was better.
Beatrice stared at Riaghaire’s old cell, lost in thought. She missed his company. Thinking about him made her heart hurt. Was he alive? Would he show up to break her out? In roughly nine hours her life would be cut short, at least if the wolves had any say in the matter – which they currently did. Unfortunately.
It wasn’t like she could fight her way out, not against wolves. They were physically superior to her in every way. Even with her senses getting a boost from the mate bond, the gap between them was wider than the ocean and taller than a mountain.
Insurmountable.
There wasn’t even enough time to think of a plan and put it in motion. Then again, even if she had more time would she be able to change anything?
Not on her own, she figured. The truth was rarely kind, after all, and she always tried to be honest with herself. The facts were she was fucked without outside help and she didn’t even know if there were people on the outside trying to get to her out.
Gregory had said the staff at Kaleidoscope would help find Riaghaire but that didn’t mean it extended to cover her ass, too. She was human, after all, and most of them were ambivalent about her existence. There was a chance they’d come for her, eventually, but what if it was after she’d been executed?
What if they couldn’t find Riaghaire? Or they only found his body – did vampires even leave bodies? – and realize this was all her fault; would they decide to abandon her altogether?
No… Claire wouldn’t let that happen.
Why was she thinking such dark thoughts? This wasn’t like her at all. Snap out of it, Beatrice. Now wasn’t the time to wallow in self pity and worry about what other people thought of her; it was time to do something. Just… maybe not physically, seeing as the bars of her cell were as sturdy as always. Breaking out wasn’t a possibility.
That left her with only one option; weaponizing what she knew and twisting what she thought she understood into something she could use to change their minds about the whole executing her thing. Without marking Hendricks. That was the most important part. It was the one thing she absolutely refused to, compromise on. So, what was left?
Knowing the name ‘Noble Ashcliff‘ was pure coincidence. It’d taken most of the meeting to remember why Elder Ashcliff’s name stuck ous to Beatrice and, when it’d finally clicked, she’d never been more relieved. It was too much like having a word on the tip of your tongue but being able to figure out what it was; annoying as fuck but oh so satisfying when you finally remembered.
Now she had to figure out why the name had caused such a ruckus. The Elders had talked about Asscliff’s – yes, she found a better name for him and she had no regrets about it bloodline only continuing because he’d had a second son, presumably after his first had died.
But… was that the truth? He’d been irate when Elder Bluemoon had mentioned remembering things differently. Did that mean the first son hadn’t died? If so, what had actually happened, she wondered, to said son and why? There was so much she didn’t know.
This had all come up in response to her second and most important question: had any wolt ever chosen a human mate. Did that mean his son’s supposed
death was somehow connected to a human?
And who was Noble Ashcliff? All Beatrice knew was the name. Her dad had said it, long ago, and she remembered thinking it was pretty. She then begged him to change hers to Noble. He’d, of course, refused.
