The creak of the gate at the bottom of the stairs drew Beatrice from her thoughts. Looking up, she was startled, and a bit unhappy, to see Hendricks standing on the other side of the bars.

“Beatrice…” he trailed off as he stuffed his hands into the pockets of his pants.

“Can I help you?,” she inquired, crossing her arms as she waited for whatever bullshit he was going to spew next. Would he apologize? Try and talk her into

changing her mind?

That wasn’t what she’d been expecting to hear. What did it matter to him how she may, or may not, have known this person? Had Asscliff ordered him down

there to get an answer?

Hendricks pursed his lips together and said nothing.

Frowning, he cocked his head to one side. “Owe you? For what? Don’t tell me you think I owe you for the ‘kidnapping‘ and all that.”

His eyes widened before he averted his gaze. A couple seconds later, he made a growling noise and turned back to glared at Beatrice. “How did you find out? Who told you?”
