They expected hit to talk to a house ent? Were they trying to insult him or… No. Keep it together. It didn’t matter who or what he had to talk to about this. the point was to build bridges, not burn them.
“Now that we’ve finished the small talk, let’s get to why you’ve come knocking at our door after hours, shall we?”
Donovan closed his eyes for a moment and when he opened them he found that someone had poured a shot of the whiskey. “Did you ?”
The wampus cat – Gregory he’d called himself – purred with laughter. “Do I look like I can pick up a bottle, let alone open and pour it
Fair point. Gregory had no thumbs and hadn’t moved since taking his spot on the bar top. Who, then? There had been no sound, no scent, no nothing to indicate another being had been present.
Taking the glass, Donovan eyed the amber liquid before figuring, what the hell, and had a sip. It was smoky with an earthy undertone. Peat smoke, most likely, with oak and malt? Either way, it was top shelf stuff, which surprised him.
“Well?,” the wampus cat prodded once Donovan has set down his glass.
“I need to apologize for my… involvement in Alpha Hendricks‘ stupidity.” There was no way he was going to call the other Alpha’s attempt to grab Beatrice from Kaleidoscope a raid. It had been a shit show. “I was the one who told him where to find the human – Beatrice, I mean – and that led to… what
happened.”
“And why do you feel guilty about your part?”
The question confused Donovan. Why did he feel guilty about it? Wasn’t it obvious? “I don’t… why does it matter?”
“I will clarify, under the caveat that you will be honest when answering. And yes, I will know if you’re lying even a little.”
Donovan gave a slow nod, unsure if he believed this tiny feline was capable of telling truth from lie.
“Is your guilt based on the consequences that came from your participation or because the outcome wasn’t in your favour?”
Oh. That was… fair. There was definitely guilt because of the consequences that came with the fuck up but his wolves actually hadn’t taken part on rive rand, so the outcome was irrelevant.
Something Avery had once said to Donovan rang in his ears. She’d asked him if he ever thought about all the people who ww. pffected by his actions it even those not part of the decision, but still affected by it, mattered.
Kaleidoscope had suffered because of what had happened, but who else? Wolves, sure, but that was obvious.
Donovan let out a sigh, fingers playing on the rim of his glass. “I want to be better. I’ve always known strength is more than what you can do as 40 individual because wolves have their packs. Always. I never once considered helping or asking for help from Others because of that But Beatrice! She’s human. She’s weak. And yet… she is able to stand up against both wolves and a Master vampire.”
“Get to the point, Alpha. There is a sunbeam in my office calling my name
Pursing his lips, the wolf glared at the feline for a moment before letting out another sigh and finishing his whiskey “I regret how I acted, how I thought she was beneath me because of what she is. That said… It would be easy for me to apologize for what happened here but that’s not my place, Hendricks and his wolves were the ones who chose to attack instead of talk. An apology from me would mean nothing on that front.
