Chapter 157
Something in the tone he’d used made Donovan not want to answer, so he took a page from Claire’s book. “Someone who wanted to address Alpha Hendricks.” As non-answers went it was weak, but like hell was he going to sell the band of merry he makers out, especially when The Riaghaire was one of them. He’d learned his lesson; there was no need for a repeat, thanks.
“Who?,” the Beta snapped but Alpha Hendricks had lowered the letter with a frown.
“Do you know what this says?,” asked the Bluemoon Alpha.
Of course Donovan knew what it said but he wasn’t about to admit that he’d watched it being written. “The gist of it
Hendricks balled the letter up but Beta Benedict took it from him before it could be tossed aside like trash. What was making the Beta act so possessive over some paper? Donovan pushed the thought away. It wasn’t what he was there to do.
“This is just a pathetic attempt to save Beatrice from execution. She brought this on herself. I couldn’t stop it even if I wanted to,” Hendricks scowled.
“You want your fated mate to die?” Donovan had guessed the other Alpha would eventually reach a breaking point, but for it to be so soon and to this extreme was a surprise.
“Of course not,” the Bluemoon Alpha snapped. “But the decision has been made and I’m not going to defy the Council. If she’d have just accepted the mate bond none of this would’ve happened. She can still save herself but refuses.”
There was nothing Donovan could say in response. If she accepted the mate bond then, yes, this would all go away, but they all knew that wasn’t going to
happen. Ever.
“You’re welcome to stay for the execution,” Hendricks continued with a small shrug of his shoulders. “Rooms have been prepared for you and your Gamma.
If you need anything else, just ask.” Alpha Hendricks turned and disappeared inside once he finished speaking, leaving his Beta with the two visitors.
“He seems… unsettled,” Donovan muttered.
Beta Benedict gave a slow nod. “I’m sure you can understand why.”
“What’s up with you, anyway?”
Startled, the Beta frowned. “What do you mean?”
Donovan nodded to the letter and envelope the other wolf was still clutching like he was worried someone might take them away. He’d even gone so far as
to smooth the wrinkles out of the paper.
Following the Alpha’s gaze, Benedict grimaced, lowering his hands as he tried to downplay his odd behaviour. “I’m just curious who would be so insistent on
Beatrice’s life being spared.”
“She does have friends,” Donovan pointed out, which startled the Beta a second time.
“Friends? You mean Claire?”
“Not just her,” he replied. “If I were you, I’d read that letter carefully before making a decision.“
Beta Benedict glanced down at the letter he still clutched. Before he was able to say anything, Alpha Donovan walked into the pack house, leaving the wolf

standing outside: Gamma Porte: followed without needing to be told.
An Omega wolf greeted them when they stepped inside and showed them to the second floor guest quarters. Only once he was alone again did Donovan relax. Step one complete. Now they Kad to wait for midnight.
