Chapter 206
“I don’t know if this matters, Benedict began, drawing their attention back to him. “But I don’t think Hendricks’ wolf survived the rejection.”
“What do you mean?,” frowned Beatrice.
“It’s a possible side effect of being rejected – losing your wolf. I… I’m pretty sure his wolf faded in the hours after you rejected him. Us. Everyone…”
“Huh. That’s… good to know, I guess.” Beatrice was surprised they could lose their wolves. Who knew? Though it did beg the question; could they als their human halves, leaving only the wolf behind? Not that it mattered. It was just a passing thought, one she didn’t feel the need to verify.
Beatrice turned back to face Hendricks with the feeling of someone tying her stomach in knots. Riaghaire, having been watching her closely, said,
“Gréine…?”
“Hm?,” she hummed, glancing at the vampire. “I’m fine… Really. But, I think we’re done here.”
“You have no questions… for that one?”
“No. Benedict covered everything in his place.”
Without bothering to give her rejected mate one last look, Beatrice and Riaghaire left the dungeon.
When they reached the main floor, Beatrice decided to follow the smell of freshly baked cookies, which led them to the kitchen where Claire and Donor
were indulging themselves.
“You have cookies?,” she exclaimed, the knots in her stomach suddenly forgotten in the wake of fresh baked goods.
“Maybe,” Claire replied as she took a bite out of what was obviously a cookie.
Beatrice sidled up to her friend and took one from the plate on the counter. Peanut butter. Excellent.
“So how’d it go?,” the blond prodded. “Learn everything you needed?”
“And more,” Beatrice nodded, talking around the cookie in her mouth.
Donovan crossed his arms as he regarded the human for a moment. “Have you made a decision ya then punishme
“Sort of,” she replied, taking a second cookie
“Sort of?,” Claue echoed “How do you sort of know what you want?
“It’s complicated

for the most part. Just a pack animal who was raised to believe hierarchy was all that mattered; that But Renedict wasn’t a completely horrible person following orders was the only choice. Beatrice couldn’t really fault him for the shitty things he’d done – at least not fully. She blamed him, to an extent, but when you were raised to be a certain way it was difficult to change unless something major destroyed your entire world view and you were given a chance to
make things right.
Beatrice had achieved the first part; she’d completely destroyed the illusion of control an Alpha was suppose to have before stomping all over it for good measure. It was only luck that the former Beta had broken through the haze of obedience; luck that his fated mate was her best friend, thus pitting his need to obey against his desire to be with his mate.
