Chapter 211

BEATRICE

Beatrice settled on the couch with a contented sigh. Claire’s place had begun to feel like home and it felt good to be ‘home’.

“By the way,” the blond began, stopping in front of where Beatrice sat, hands on her hips “Since when does your mom have my number?”

Beatrice blinked. “Uh. Not sure. But you’ve had the same number since we were teens so I’m not surprised? Don’t tell me… why is she calling you?”

“Because her ungrateful daughter isn’t answering her phone and she’s demanding you explain yourself.*、

Explain herself? That was cryptic. There were about a dozen different things her mom might want an explanation for; couldn’t she have narrowed it

bit?

“Did she give you any other detail?”

Claire sighed. “Nope. Just demanded you call her with an explanation. She’s done this every day for the past week and I’m over it. If she follows her u! schedule, I’ll be getting another call within the hour. So call your damn mom and get her off my back.”

Beatrice rolled her eyes. The last thing she wanted to do calling the woman was the least she could do.

ever was call her mom, but Claire had been a mostly perfect friend these last few weeks;

Dammit.

Groaning, Beatrice pulled out her phone as Claire took a seat. It rang twice before her mom picked up. “Beatrice. Elaine. Conrad,” the voice on the other spat. Yeah, that was pretty much what she’d been expecting.

“Yes, Mom?”

“You owe me three hundred dollars, you thief! And I had to get the cleaning lady in an extra day to tidy up the mess you left behind, which is another

hundred.”

Beatrice forced herself to hold back the sigh that demanded to be let out. Breathe, she reminded herself. It would be over soon enough. “Why dan Tou pawn the stuff I left behind? That should be more than enough to cover what I owe with some leftover.”

“I am not stepping a single toe in a grubby little pawn shop to hawk what’s probably stolen loot

to wear, yes, but

Okay, that was fair But was it technically stolen property, Beatrice wondered the circlet, bracelet and eggings had been given to hei it’d been implied they were hers as Luna so they belonged to her, which meant she could do with them what she wanted. Well, that sound like a you problem,” she pointed our “Those pieces are worth o kur but, Moun” A he Maybe she had no hea what they were worth but they were beautiful proves that looked like they’d been made by a top tier sraftasion, if they weren’t worth much then why the fuck had she been made to wear them? “first because you refuse to trade them in for cash value doesnt mean I haven’t paid you back

“You little…! You know very well it’s not the same thing I den and you pay me what you owe u I will call the cops and have you arrested for theft “

“I mean.

you could try, I guess,” Beatrice shrugged, not that her mom could we “But then you need to explain why you are in the possession of supposed stolen property and have been for weeks without contacting them about it

There was a lengthy silence on the other end of the line

“Lalso transferred you the three hundred dollars two weeks ago. Check your email. Is there anything else you want to yell at me about?”

More silence, then, “You’re a terrible daughter.” The line went dead, her mom having cut the call.

“That went better than expected,” Beatrice said, sounding surprised.

“What the hell did you leave at her place?” Claire demanded. “If it’s worth as much as you say, you should get it back.”

“It’s the stuff they made me wear for the Luna ceremony,” Beatrice explained. “And I’d rather have nothing to do with it, thanks. If she tries to return it to me, just send it to Donovan or some other wolf. I’m sure they’d be happy to get it back. Probably.”

“Did we not leave her home in order?” Riaghaire asked, looking confused. “Why did she say it required cleaning?”

“Because to her, a spec of dust is a mess,” Beatrice explained. “Don’t worry about it. Just be glad she’s not here to rant in person.”

The vampire gave a slow nod and suddenly stiffened, head turning towards the front door. “Someone is here.”

“Expecting guests?” Beatrice asked, looking over at a frowning Claire.

“No. You?”

“Nope.”

The three of them stared at the door until whoever was there finally knocked. Before either woman was able to get up, Riaghaire was taking a look through the peephole. His shoulders noticeably stiffened at the sight of whoever was on the other side.

“Who is it?” Claire asked as the vampire opened the door.
