Chapter 74

Riaghaire waited for her to say more, but Claire stayed silent as she glared in his direction. Ife wasn’t about to ask her to elaborate If she wanted to discuss something, she would need to bring up without prompting.

“Have you ever mesmered her, or drank her blood?” She finally demanded.

“No.”

Claire blinked in surprise. “What? I figured… Why haven’t you?”

“Does it matter?” He replied, meeting her gaze for a moment before she looked away.

“Yes, it does. She’s human, and vampires are obsessed with human blood.”

Riaghaire let out a sigh. “I have no intention of ever… partaking in her blood, if possible. That is all you need to know. The ‘why’ is irrelevant.”

“No, it’s not.”

“Yes, it is.”

“No, it’s-” She cut herself off when Riaghaire raised a finger to his lips in a shushing gesture, looking off to the side.

There were sounds coming from the bedroom where his gréine slept. Had she woken up? No… it didn’t sound like that. She was speaking in a low, mumbling

voice.

Right. He was reminded that she spoke in her sleep. That had to be what was happening, but he needed to verify, just in case.

Riaghaire was on his feet and down the hall in the blink of an eye. Opening the door, he scanned the room before settling his attention on his human. She’d rolled over at some point to now face the door. She was indeed mumbling in her sleep.

“What is it?” Claire demanded in a low voice, stepping into the room to look at her friend. “What’s wrong?”

“She is speaking in her sleep,” he explained, straining his ears to make out the words that were being mumbled. Her speech was slurred with sleep and difficult for him to decipher, but it didn’t sound like she was in distress. He’d been worried that the beast had broken through the bond, entering her dreams, but that didn’t seem to be the case. Last time that had happened, she’d been showing outward signs of distress.

“Is that all?” Claire grumbled. “Why were you so worried? She does this all the time.”

Riaghaire glanced at the non-human out of the corner of his eye. It wasn’t for him to explain and he had so desire to try. “Have we finished our discussion?,” he asked instead.

With narrowed eyes and pursed lips, Claire nodded.

“Then please leave, so she does not wake.”

It was obvious the blond wanted to object but, after glancing at the sleeping form one more time, she turned and left, closing the door in her wake.

The vampire waited until the sound of her steps told him Claire had entered her own room before returning to his spot on the bed As he settled in. Beatrice proceeded to roll over in her sleep. One of her arms draped itself over Riaghaire’s legs as she pressed her forehead into his thigh, causing him to freeze He waited for a moment, only to hear her let out a relaxed sigh. Her mumbling came to an end as he waited to see if she would wake
