Chapter 96
BEATRICE
The plan was simple – stupidly simple – and Beatrice was proud of herself for having come up with it. It might also be considered a stupid plan, but the simplicity made it beautiful in its own way. At least, that’s what she would say if anyone asked.
Not that anyone asked.
Riaghaire wasn’t happy about The Plan but he’d conceded at being unable to think of a better one.
The first part was the easiest; only agree to meet the Master vampire in a neutral location- the more public, the better. There was less chance of them doing anything sneaky when surrounded by humans – you know, the people who didn’t know vampires were anything more than fictional creatures.
Master
This was relayed to the two fledglings loitering on the sidewalk. One left to give the message to the Master while the other stayed behind. Too bad. Beatrice had haped both would leave but, alas, she could never be that lucky. It didn’t affect The Plan so she felt like complaining about it would be pointless.
It was the second part of The Plan that was possibly stupid.
“I am not comfortable with this,” Riaghaire told her for the third time since agreeing to The Plan.
“And I hear you,” Beatrice assured him. “But it’s our best bet. You said as much.”
“I am aware, however, that does not change the fact that I am uncomfortable with it.”
His worry for her safety brought Beatrice a sense of comfort. Unfortunately for Riaghaire, it wasn’t enough of a reason to hide away from what needed to be done. It was best they do this on their own terms and not the Master’s.
Regardless, it was too late to go back now. Beatrice had already made the call and they were now stuck waiting. And waiting some more.
The vampire who’d left to deliver the message returned at one point with a response before leaving once again. Ten minutes after that Riaghaire’s attention shifted from watching Beatrice anxiously pace to the door.
“Someone is here,” was all he said.
“Finally,” Beatrice breathed in relief as she moved to the door and threw it open.
The man on the other side gave a start, surprised at having the door open as he was about to knock, but he recovered and lowered his hand right?” His voice wasn’t as low as Donovan’s but had a softness to it.
“Uh huh… and you are…?”
“Beta Phillips,” the man grunted “I’m the Mchezaji Pack’s Beta”

Not that Beta Phillips wasn’t intimidating enough to bring along to say hi to an Old and Powerful Master vampire. It just wasn’t wh› Beatrice had pu tuted coming along for the ride. She also didn’t know this guy. At all With Donovan, she had a general feel of his character after their little chat at Kaleidoscope

Phithen, though, was an unknown and she didn’t like that. She’d alsa het Riaghaire felt the same way.
“Where’s Donovan?”
Beta Phillips frowned. He was an older man – if he’d been human, she’d have guessed fris age to be late forties or early fifties – with dark, greying hair and brown eyes. His skin was closer to what might be described as ‘sun kissed’, not dark; he probably spent too much time outside.
Like all wolves, he was broad shouldered and taller than necessary. He also had a certain edge to him that left Beatrice feeling wary. Sure, the other wolves she’d had the displeasure of meeting all had some kind of edge to them – how they stood, how they moved… it all spoke of the predator hidden under the surface – but this guy felt sharper; almost like he was an unsheathed blade waiting for the right moment to cut something.
Maybe she was feeling a bit too anxious about meeting the Master vampire. There was no reason for Beatrice to worry of this wolf, especially not after what had happened at Kaleidoscope. With Gaml having intervened and banned wolves from the bar, it should make them all wary of messing with anyone who
worked there.
Including Beatrice.
That’s what she told herself, anyway. Besides, with Riaghaire by her side, what was this guy going to do? Throw her over a shoulder and book it? Hardly. Phillips’ head would be torn off before her feet left the ground.
“This matter isn’t something an Alpha needs to deal with, so I’ve been sent in his place.”
“Okay… so… just you?”
The wolf’s frown deepened. “I brought a few others with me, since we are going to see the Master vampire.”
