Chapter 38: Knock Out The Prince

Riley’s POV

My heart was pounding like crazy in my chest.

I could already feel my life hanging by a thread.

Would Ezra go easier on me because I’m his mate? No, absolutely not. He hated me, and yet the matebond kept him from hurting me. This was his perfect chance to get rid of me.

I started trembling in the night breeze. Without thinking, I took a small step and stepped on a tiny stone.

It rolled and hit the wall with a barely audible click.

“Who’s there?!” a growl came from above.

I immediately clamped my mouth shut and pressed my back against the wall, hiding in the shadows. I heard the window above slam open.

“What’s wrong, son?” King Soren asked.

“I heard someone nearby,” Ezra said in a low voice.

I didn’t even dare breathe. Ezra wasn’t lying about his hearing. He was terrifyingly sharp.

“This is the castle. No one would dare eavesdrop here,” King Soren said dismissively. “You should get some rest now. Remember what I said about the Hunting Season-you need to win. Only then can I introduce you to those ladies.”

Ezra gave a cold acknowledgment, then closed the window.

I stood there perfectly still, like a statue. I waited until I was sure both of them had left the office before quietly stepping out of the shadows. Cold sweat had already soaked through my back.

What I heard tonight told

me one thing-

I needed to get rid of those rogues. FAST.

Otherwise, we’d all be in huge trouble.

Back in my room, I locked the door behind my back and texted Mateo.

[Tell those “troubles” to get lost tonight. This is fucking serious. Or you can consider the veilwalker gone froin your clinic.] After hitting send, I slumped into bd and sighed staring at the dark ceiling. I really hoped this mess would just disappear like

that.

That night, I tossed and turned for hours and woke up with dark circles under my eyes in the morning.

The castle’s chauffeur would drive us back to school. As I stood at the bottom of the grand staircase waiting for the prince to show up, I couldn’t stop thinking about those rogues again.

Had they left the city yet?

Had they attracted anyone’s attention?

Why on earth would they come looking for me? They must have their own doctors. What kind of rare condition could make them

seek me out-

BANG.

Someone slammed into me. Hard.

I staggered back, almost falling. It was a little kid. He threw his arms around my leg and looked up at me.

“Watch out,” I smiled, patting his head. “Now where are your parents?”

He lowered his voice, “…The Rogue Lord wants you at your friend’s club at 8 tonight.”

I froze.

The kid blinked innocently and added, “If you don’t go, they’ll kill your friend. Wreck the club. Then expose your identity to the whole world. Including your stepfather and stepbrother.”

What the fuck?!

I grabbed his arm, my voice shaking. “Who are you? Are you with them?!”

“A man gave me ten bucks to send you the message!” the kid yelled. “Let go of me!”

I released him, and he immediately ran off.

I stood there dazed, my mind in chaos.

So my message to Mateo last night didn’t solve the problem. Instead, it made things worse. Now the rogues had Mateo under control too and they were threatening me to show up.

A hand landed on my shoulder, and I nearly jumped out of my skin.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Ezra stood behind me, frowning. “You’re pale as a ghost. What happened?”

“Nothing,” I blurted out. “No… nothing. Let’s go.”

He gave me a suspicious look, then got into the car. Distracted, I followed him. My mind was at war with itself.

So the big question was-should I go meet those rogues?

If I went, I’d be a traitor and sentenced to death.

If I didn’t go, my identity would be exposed. Death sentence, again.

Either way seemed like a dead end.

The only way out seemed to be going, but making sure no one found out.

The driver dropped us off at school. I didn’t even say goodbye to Ezra before heading to class.

Later that day, when Silas texted asking me to train after school, I turned him down and lied about a family dinner that night.

As soon as my last class ended, I slipped out the back door and ran toward the school’s side entrance.

A taxi I booked was already waiting for me when I got there. I glanced around to make sure no one was watching, then sighed in

relief.

Great. If I hadn’t been spotted, my plan was halfway successful.

I opened the car door and ducked inside.

But the driver was nowhere to be seen. And there was someone sitting in the backseat. He turned to me as I got in, his green eyes gleaming coldly in the dark.

“Hello, sister.”

My heart almost stopped.

“What the hell are you doing here?!” I snapped.

He crossed his arms, studying

with a dark bok. “Maybe I should ask you the same thing. Everyone in the Hunting Season is training extra hard. Yet you turned down Silas’s invite. Where are you sneaking off)

My body stiffened. “You were spying on me?!”

“Not spying. Looking after you,” he narrowed his eyes. “You’ve been distracted all day, and now you’re sneaking out? So, where are you going?”

I bit my lip, refusing to answer. My silence seemed to anger him. He leaned in and grabbed my wrist roughly. “Are you going on a fucking date?”

My eyes widened slightly. Is that what he thought?

But him thinking I was dating someone was far better than him finding out about the rogues. I almost sighed in relief and said, Yeah, that’s what I’m doing.”

“I forbid it,” he said forcefully.

“Who the hell are you to forbid me? Your own father is setting you up with some fancy girls after the Hunting Season. What makes you think you can still butt into my business?”

“So you’re jealous? Is that it?” His green eyes stared intensely at me. “Then let me tell you something. Even if I marry someone else, you still won’t be able to escape me!”

Could he even hear himself? “Asshole!” I snapped.

“Call me whatever you want. But you are still mine,” he tightened his grip. “Now tell me who you’re meeting. Is it Odin? Or Mateo?!”

I took a deep breath.

Time was running out for me.

And it seemed he wasn’t going to let me go easily.

“You really want to know who I’m meeting?” I stared at him. “Come closer.”

He gave me a suspicious look and leaned in. We could literally hear each other’s breathing now.

Suddenly, I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed my lips against his

This was the first time I’d kissed him first.
