Chapter 56: Rough Yearning

Riley’s POV

This wasn’t the first time I kissed him.

But it’s the first time I ever felt like this.

I could feel his body stiffen for a moment, as if he couldn’t believe it. Then he suddenly tightened his arms, like he was trying to melt me into his body. His scent crashed against my soul like waves, so strong i could barely breathe, but I didn’t hate it at all.

The next thing I knew, I was pressed against the tree, with him kissing me like he wanted to swallow me as whole. I felt his hand slipping into my shirt and I quickly grabbed his wrist.

“No wait. Not now,” I breathed, my face red. Had he forgotten that we were in the middle of a competition?

He looked down at me. There was a hungry gleam in his eyes, full of lust and yafiting. 3

“Fuck, you’ve got to stop doing this to me,” he growled. “I’ve never wanted something this badly but couldn’t have it.”

“It’s not the right time. And Silas-”

His face darkened instantly. “Don’t mention other men right now.”

I finished anyway. “And my teammates are still around.”

He inhaled deeply as though trying to suppress some strong urges. Our bodies were practically pressed against each other. I could feel his huge erection against me. My face burned red.

“OK. Then how are you going to make it up to me later?” he whispered, his voice hoarse and threatening.

I cleared my throat. “When it’s the right time…”

“No. Too vague.” He grabbed my chin. “As soon as this stupid game ends, we’ll come to my room and I’ll fuck the brain out of

you.”

His rough words made me flinch. God, his dominant side… I both hate it and love it.

“But remember our bet? You’d have to win me first to have me,” I rescued my chin from his grip, giving him a challenging look. “Sex with me doesn’t come that easily.”

He snorted, “Only a matter of time.”

I rolled my eyes.

That smug bastard.

“OK if we’re not going to have sex, I gotta go now. Hey, here’s something for you.”

Ezra reached into his jacket and pulled out a small red cylinder with a silver cap. He pressed it into my hand.

I frowned down at it. “What’s this?”

“A flare firework,” he said. “Shoot it into the sky if something goes wrong.”

I looked up sharply. “I don’t need

“I know you don’t. But just in case,” His expression turned serious again. “If you’re in trouble, use it.”

My fingers closed around the firework. Then I put it in my pocket.

He leaned down slightly, forehead almost touching mine.

“Go back to camp, Riley.”

“Try not to miss me too much,” I smiled.

He grinned. “Too late.”

And then he was gone.

Melting back into the dark trees and leaving my heart pounding like an idiot all over again.

I stood alone in the clearing for a few more seconds, fingers still wrapped around the place where he’d pressed the firework into my palm.

Then I let out a breath and went back to camp.

The next morning, the ranking pillar told us everything we needed to know.

Camila’s team had dropped.

Hard.

They were now below us by a decent margin, probably because of their injuries and the chaos in their alliance.

I stood with Silas in front of the map while Odin checked our supply count nearby and Olivia hovered behind him in an ugly silence.

Silas folded his arms. “That buys us a little breathing room.”

“Not enough,” I said.

He nodded grimly. “Yeah.”

Our original plan had been to cut through the narrow stone pass to reach the eastern ridge before noon. That was where the Silverstags liked to roam-fast, rare beasts worth a stupid amount of points.

Only one problem.

A rockslide had wiped the pass out.

We could see it from where we stood: half the cliff had collapsed inward, burying the path under a mess of shattered stone and uprooted trees.

No one was getting through there quickly.

Silas clicked his tongue. “If we take the long route, we lose half a day.”

“And other teams get there first,” I finished.

Odin finished checking supplies and came to join us. “So what’s the plan? We push through?”

I looked at the ruined pass again.

Every instinct I had screamed not to rush this.

Too risky. Too many enemies could be waiting for us to make one reckless move

“No,” I said. “I say we test the landscape first.”

Silas glanced at me, then slowly nodded. “Safer.”

Olivia muttered, “And slower.”

“OK then we split up and scout,” Silas said. “Not far. Stay in whistle range. Look for side routes, old animal trails, anything that leads upward without bottlenecking us. If something feels wrong, don’t play hero. Back off and signal.”

Everyone nodded.

A few minutes later, we spread out.

The forest here was rougher than the valley, all broken stone and leaning pines. For a while, all I found were dead ends.

I crouched near a patch of disturbed soil, studying hoofprints, when the hairs on the back of my neck rose.

Shit.

Someone was behind me.

Who’s it? Not my teammates for sure. An enemy? Maybe.

I stayed still for a second.

Then I moved.

I spun low, yanked out my dagger, and lunged into the brush beside me.

A figure stumbled back with a curse. I drove him against a tree, blade at his throat.

“Move and I cut you,” I snapped.

The figure froze.

Then I saw his face. And my heart nearly stopped.

“…Roy?”

My old-time friend looked awful.

Paler than I remembered. Dirt smeared across his cheek. His clothes were torn, and there was something wild and desperate in his eyes I’d never seen before.

“Riley, please…help me,” he breathed.
