Chapter 3: Freeloader
Riley’s POV
I was so startled that I almost stumbled out of the dress.
“Get out,” I snapped, spinning around at last.
Ezra was standing right behind me, dressed in dark clothes that made his eyes look even sharper. He looked completely at ease in the middle of my fitting room, like sneaking into a locked bridal suite was just another ordinary part of his day.
His gaze moved over me slowly, from the white silk hugging my body to the bare skin of my shoulders.
My pulse went wild as his gaze roamed around.
Then he stepped forward.
“I said! Get the hell ou-”
I barely had time to suck in a breath before his mouth crashed into mine.
The force of it drove me backward. I shoved at his chest instantly, furious, but Ezra caught both my wrists so damn easily and pinned me against the wall beside the mirror.
His body pressed me there, all heat and strength and control.
The kiss was wild, angry, hungry enough to make my knees go weak. He kissed like he meant to break through every last one of my defenses.
That kiss instantly brought me back to those few wild nights that we had. I hated it but my mind was getting cloudy. I was starting to forget who we were and where we were at.
For a moment, it’s just me and him. Wile and desperate.
Then a knock rattled the door.
“My lady?” the designer called from outside. “Do you need any assistance?”
I turned my head sharply, breaking the kiss. The reality snapped back to me.
“No!” I said. “I-I’m fine.”
I tried to force my voice steady even though my breathing was still rough.
There was a brief pause.
“May we come in and see the fit?” she asked. “See if we can make any adjustment?”
“No.” The answer came out sharper than I intended. “I…not now. Maybe later. I’ll let you know.”
Outside, the designer quickly apologized and retreated. The crisis was temporarily resolved.
Behind me, Ezra let out a low chuckle. As though it’s funny to see me this panic.
The sound made fresh anger flare through me.
I glared at him. “I thought I made it perfectly clear that I don’t want you around. So what the hell is this?”
The amusement disappeared from his face as if it had never been there. He looked at me for one hard, silent second.
Then he said, “Don’t marry him.”
For a moment I honestly thought I had misheard. “What?”

His grip looserred, but he didn’t step away. “Don’t marry Leon. It’s a mistake.”
I pushed at fits chest until he finally let me go, Nen stepped away from the wall and turned to face him fully.
“I thought you didn’t care,” I said, clenching my fists beside my body. “You’ve got Viola now, remember? Your perfect little girlfriend? What makes you think you can influence my life decisions?”
Ezra came closer again and caught my chin between his fingers, forcing fee to look up at him.
“We are mates,” he said deeply. “And yeah, I’ve come around. You’re the Moon Goddess’s choice for me. That means I get to keep you.”
The words were so arrogant I almost laughed in his face.
“Keep me how?” I asked. “As what? Your girlfriend? Your mistress? Your little secret fuckbuddy? Someone you can drag into bed whenever you feel like it?”
His expression darkened.
I didn’t stop. I kept going.
“Our relationship can never be public, Ezra. You know that. So what exactly are you offering me besides being screwed over?”
Something flashed in his eyes then, ugly and furious.
He let go of my chin and said, “Is that why you chose Leon? Because he can give you a title and a cheap last name? Those things are fucking worthless.”
I looked him right in the eye, “Then what you can promise me, huh? Money? Power? I don’t want any of those. His offer is much more valuable than yours if you ask me.”
His mouth tightened. Then after a pause, he let out a sneer like he needed it to cover whatever I had just hit.
“Fine, I don’t need you to comply anyway,” he said lightly and/dangerously. “I can easily ruin your dreamy little wedding.”
I folded my arms. “Be at my service. And how did you even get in here? Nobody invited you to this fitting and there’re guards everywhere.”
He shrugged. “I’ve got men everywhere. Even under my father’s nose.”
“OK very impressive. Can you leave me alone now, Prince Ezra?” I asked mockingly.
Ezra looked at me strangely, almost thoughtfully.
Then he stepped closer one last time, lowered his head, and buried his face against my neck.
I gasped. “What are you-AHH!”
Then his teeth sank into my skin.
I cried out.
It was sharp enough to sting and hot enough to make my whole body jolt. Outside the door, footsteps rushed toward the room at
once.
“My lady? What happened?”
“Open the door Please!”
Ezra lifted his head just enough to look at me. There was the evilest, darkest smile on his mouth.
Then he stepped backward, reached for the panel hidden in the wall beside the wardrobe, and disappeared through it like he was
neve here
The next secund the door Thin
The designer and two maids hurried in, all wide eyes and alarm. I was still standing in the middle of the room in the white dress, one hand pressed over the place Ezra had bitten, my chest still rising and falling rapidly
“My lady!” one of the maids gasped “What happened?”
I forced myself to breathe and look normal.
“My neck cramped,” I said “That’s all ”
They exchanged doubtful looks, but none of them dared push too hard. The designer moved closer, tryg to recover her bright professional tone.
“And the gown, my lady? How do you like it?”
I looked down at the white silk clinging perfectly to my body and barely saw it anymore.
Because my chaotic mind was completely Ezra.
I didn’t believe for one second that he was serious with his threat to destroy my wedding. He got Viola now. Why waste any time on me?
And even if he was serious about destroying the wedding, it wouldn’t be to save me. It would be to drag me right back into the same dark, toxic relationship with him.
And I didn’t want that.
But I didn’t want Leon either.
That was the real fucking nightmare.
The days raced forward anyway.
More guests arrived in the city. Alphas and Lunas began filling the palace and the estates around it.
Every day there were more flowers, more fittings, more whispers about the wedding.
The whole kingdom seemed to be leaning toward those vows, and I felt smallek and smaller beneath the weight of it.
୮
Then Leon’s mother, Yilia, announced she was hosting a charity auction.
She said she would be donating several of her family heirlooms and giving all the earnings to underfed poor kids. Everyone thought that was very generous and kind of her. Almost everyone invited RSVP yes.
I didn’t have any options. I was forced to attend.
They dressed me in silver that night.
The gown was cut lower than I would ever have chosen for myself, close against my body. The neckline showed more of my chest than I liked, and the fitted waist made my curves impossible to hide.
It was pretty and sexy enough to make every maid sigh over me while they worked.
