Chapter 103 A Powerless Mate
Chapter 103 A Powerless Mate
James’s POV:
The air inside the tent froze.
Viola drew the short blade at her waist and stared at me with sharp eyes.
Miguel clenched his fists.
But Cindy actually laughed.
There was no resentment in that smile. Only a cold calm that made it hard to breathe.
“James, you think too highly of yourself and of Evelyn,” she said.

She walked around the table and stopped in front of me. Her voice was light, almost like a breeze. “The moment you both broke your vows, you were already dead to me. I don’t need to use someone else’s hand to kill you. You’ll destroy yourselves. Evelyn’s greed and your foolishness-that’s what will truly kill her.”
“You…” My heart lurched. The way she looked at me-it was the look you give a stranger.
“And besides,” Cindy leaned close to my ear and spoke softly, “some debts must be paid. Evelyn owed a debt at Evernight Gorge. Now the creditors have come. Do you really think you can stop that?”
“What do you mean? What debt?” I asked, shaken.
“Get out,” Cindy said as she stepped back. Her voice turned cold again. “Go back to your camp. If you move even one soldier without my order, I will deal with you under military law. I will have you executed.”
“Cindy!”
“Drag him out!”
Two tall wolfguard stepped in. One grabbed each of my arms and dragged me out of the command tent.
Outside, the cold wind hit my face and left my head spinning.
I looked up at the stars filling the sky and felt a weakness I had never known before.
I hated Cindy.
I hated her being cold-blooded. I hated her clear mind.
But I hated myself even more.
Because I knew she was right.
I had no command, no power, and not even the courage to save Evelyn on my own.
All I could do was stand here, furious and helpless.

Chapter 103 A Powerless Mate
Cindy’s POV:
I watched James get dragged away. The chill in my eyes slowly faded, replaced by exhaustion.

“Cindy,” Viola said as she put her blade away, worry on her face. “Are you okay? What he said was awful.”
“I’m fine,” I said, shaking my head. “Just a mad dog barking.”
“So we really just wait here?” Miguel asked. “What does Franklin want? He captured Evelyn but didn’t kill her. No demands. He’s just sitting on that mountain and dragging things out.”
I looked toward the dark peak in the distance-Grimridge Mountain.
Franklin’s army was camped there.
“He’s waiting,” I said softly. “He’s waiting for Evelyn to break. He’s waiting to take back every wrong done to him.”
“Justice?” Viola asked in puzzlement. “Vampires care about justice?”
“Viola,” I sighed, “werewolves and vampires are sworn enemies, but some lines are shared by both. Evelyn crossed that line. She opened Pandora’s box. Now the demons have come to collect.”
I turned back to the map table.
“Send the order. Tighten all defenses. But remember this: no matter what happens on that mountain, even if you hear screams, no one moves. We wait for Franklin’s final signal.”
James’s POV:
The night was black as ink.
I sat alone in my tent, gripping a bottle of strong liquor, drinking mouthful after mouthful.
I couldn’t accept this.
Evelyn was suffering. How could I just sit here and do nothing?
If Cindy wouldn’t give me soldiers, then I would go myself.
“Form up!” I shouted. “Duskfang Pack, prepare to hunt!”
No one answered.
I pulled open the tent flap and froze. At some point, a full ring of Gamma Guards had appeared outside
my tent.
They stood like steel towers, faces blank.
“Move aside!” I drew my sword. “I’m leaving!”
