Chapter 106 An Apology from the Enemy

Chapter 106 An Apology from the Enemy

Cindy’s POV:

We stopped about 30 feet from Franklin.

At this distance, a top-tier fighter could reach us in a heartbeat.

But I sensed no killing intent from him. Only deep exhaustion and grief.

“Lord Marshal,” I said, dipping my head in a formal military salute.

It was respect for strength, not for race.

Franklin looked at me, a trace of approval in his eyes.

“Duchess of Silverpeak,” he said quietly. “You are very much like your father. Years ago, I fought Benjamin in Northmere. He stood just like this; his back was straighter than the spear. Your people are fortunate to have someone like you.”

“You flatter me,” I replied calmly. “If my father were here, he would say that on the battlefield, there is only victory or defeat. There are no friendships.”

“Winners and losers…” Franklin gave a bitter smile and shook his head. “In this war, there were no winners. We all lost.”

His gaze shifted past me to James. The calmness in his eyes sharpened at once, like a drawn blade.

“This must be the Alpha of the Duskfang Pack,” Franklin said coldly. “Evelyn’s mate? The man who chose a woman over the Duchess of Silverpeak? The man blind to what truly mattered?”

James went rigid in the saddle. He clenched his jaw. “Where is Evelyn?” he demanded. “What did you do to her?”

“Be patient. You will see her,” Franklin said, ignoring him. He turned back to me, his face heavy and solemn.

“Duchess, I know the hatred in your heart. You hate us for invading Southreach. You hate us for massacring your pack.”

At the mention of my pack, Diana let out a low growl inside me. My nails dug deep into my palm as I fought the urge to shift and tear him apart.

“But,” Franklin took a slow breath, as if making a painful choice, “there is something you deserve to know. This is my final explanation-from one elder who lost family to another who lost everything.

“The fall of Silverpeak Pack was not for conquest,” he said. “It was for revenge.”

His words echoed across the open plain, each one landing like a hammer.

“I had a young relative I cherished. During the conflict at Evernight Gorge, he went missing. We believed

he had died in battle. Later, we found him.”

Franklin closed his eyes. When he spoke again, his voice was tight. “He had been abused beyond recognition. Castrate. Broken. Humiliated. Treated worse than an animal. And the one responsible for it all was your general-Evelyn.”

“What?!” James cried out, his face draining of color. “That’s impossible! Evelyn said-”

“Shut up!” Franklin snapped. His eyes flew open, glowing a dark red. The surge of pressure nearly knocked James from his horse. “Listen to me.”

Franklin looked back at me, regret clear in his voice. “At the time, we were blinded by rage. Intelligence reports said the area was under Silverpeak Pack control. We believed your people were responsible. We believed Benjamin ordered it. So the Emperor gave the command to wipe out the Silverpeak Pack entirely
