No more than ten minutes after I’d returned from Priscilla’s, James showed up in my courtyard with Evelyn right behind him, bold and unashamed.
Evelyn was dressed head to toe in tight battle gear, leather that hugged every inch of her athletic frame. Her wolf spirit burned fierce and sharp, radiating raw aggression. She scanned my old territory with a mix of smugness and judgment that was impossible to miss.
Evelyn was the first to break the silence, her voice blunt and commanding–like a newly crowned trying to assert her power. “Cindy, since you’re facing the future true Luna of the Duskfang Pack, maybe it’s time you showed a little respect and bowed your proud head.”
Diana, my wolf spirit, snarled in my mind, dripping with contempt. “She’s way too full of herself.”
I sat up straight, refusing to meet her eyes. Pouring a cup of coffee, I answered coolly, calm but firm. “The future’s for later. For now, I am still the rightful Luna of the Duskfang Pack. Evelyn, is this your way of practicing the power you think you’ll get?”
Evelyn’s face darkened. James frowned next to her but didn’t say a word to stop her.
With a sharp laugh, Evelyn stepped closer. “Cut the act, Cindy. I’ve heard about the huge inheritance you brought from the Silverpeak Pack. The Duskfang Pack just fought a war, and the young wolves need gear. Since you’re part of this pack, you should help out. Give up some of your private fortune to outfit the pack. That’s the least you can do as your last duty.”
Her attitude was unbelievable, as if my private wealth were hers to use whenever she pleased.
“My duty?” I finally looked up, my eyes cold and sharp as ice. “The elders know how much I’ve already given to the pack. My estate? That’s my father’s legacy to me. What does that have to do with the pack? Evelyn, if you want to be a good Luna, spend your time building our wealth and expanding territory, not stealing what’s mine.”
“How dare you!” Evelyn snapped. “Don’t forget you’re still a member of the Duskfang Pack! Everything you own belongs to the pack! As Luna, I have every right to manage pack resources, including your personal assets!”
“Luna?” I sneered, dripping with sarcasm. “You’re not Luna yet. As long as I am the rightful Luna of this pack, you have no say here, and you certainly won’t lay a finger on what isn’t yours.”
“You little-” Evelyn’s chest heaved with rage, her wild energy flaring, clearly pushed to the edge by my words.

“Enough!” James finally cut in, his brow furrowce as he glared at me, his voice dripping with fake patience and condescension. “Cindy, stop wasting time with pointless fights. Evelyn’s idea is for the pack’s future.”
He paused, picking his words carefully, a strange mix of arrogance and fake generosity in his tone. “Because of the destiny bond between us, Evelyn and I have agreed that once she becomes Luna, you will raise our first child together. That child will be the future Alpha of the Duskfang Pack. By raising him, you secure your place as his ‘foster mother‘, guaranteeing your comfort and peace for life.”
He smirked, clearly convinced his offer was perfect. “Also, if Evelyn and I ever have to go to war, you can temporarily assume some of the Luna’s duties and manage the pack’s affairs. How about that? I’ve already done more than enough for you.”
Evelyn stayed quiet beside him, silently approving this ridiculous plan.
