Chapter 126 The Three-Month Deadline
Chapter 126 The Three-Month Deadline
King Ryken’s POV:
Sunlight streamed through the study windows, calm yet commanding.
I sat in my chair and listened to Isabella’s report.
“She really said that?” I asked. My voice echoed in the wide room.
“Without doubt,” Isabella replied, seated below me. She looked relaxed, as if her task were done. “She refused outright. There was even a hint of shame and anger. Since she refuses to accept Niall, perhaps we should drop the matter. To be fair, Niall truly isn’t worthy of her.”
I gave a low chuckle. “Worthy? Of course he isn’t. Marrying a hawk that rules the skies to a pig that rolls in the mud would be a waste.”
Isabella froze. “Then, why did you—”
“This is strategy,” I said, standing and walking to the large map of the realm. My finger traced Southreach newly secured land. “Cindy is a blade-too sharp. She’s been hurt before, and her heart is sealed. If I openly ordered her to marry Adam, she’d guard herself like he was an enemy. Pride or shame would drive her away.”
I turned back to Isabella. “But what if I give her the worst possible comparison?”
She looked confused. “With someone as disgusting as Niall chasing after her, she’ll have to find safe ground,” I continued. “In the whole kingdom, who else can protect her? Who else could she willingly trust, if not Adam?”
Isabella sucked in a breath. Her gaze grew complicated. “Are you scheming against your own son?”
“I’m helping that idiot,” I snapped. “Adam is fearless on the battlefield, but the moment he faces Cindy, he turns into a toothless cub. If I don’t push him-if I don’t create an outside threat-he’ll cling to that pure, pointless friendship forever.”
“But… Cindy’s status,” Isabella hesitated. “She isn’t Adam’s destined mate, and she’s no longer innocent-
“And what of it?” I frowned. “Why do you sound like those dinosaurs? Many in the House Ryken have waited centuries for a destined mate. Should I let my bloodline end because of that myth? Cindy is exceptional. If she’s strong enough, no one will care about the rest. Right now, she is the best match for Adam.”
“Still, her status is a good obstacle. A test for Adam. The crown or Cindy-let’s see what he chooses.”
Isabella opened her mouth, then closed it. She said no more.
“Morton,” I called into the shadows.
A moment later, Morton appeared like a ghost.

“Prepare a royal decree,” I said, narrowing my eyes like an old wolf setting a snare.
“But no written decree. This stays verbal. You will go to Silverpeak Pack and tell Cindy yourself.

“I honor the loyalty and sacrifice of the Silverpeak bloodline and will not let it end. I grant her three months. Within those three months, she must choose a mate from among the noble heirs of the Royal Court and complete a bond by her own will.”
Isabella covered her mouth. “Three months? That’s far too rushed!”
