Chapter 138 The Fake Bond
Chapter 138 The Fake Bond
Cindy’s POV:
The air froze in an instant.
I stared at him, wide-eyed. For a second, I thought my hearing had failed me.
Inside my mind, Diana erupted into chaos. Her tail shot straight up, stiff like an antenna.
“Y-you… What did you just say?” I stammered.
Prince Adam saw the expression on my face, more fear than joy.

A flicker of disappointment crossed his eyes. It vanished just as fast. He put on a calm, careful mask.
“Ahem, don’t get the wrong idea.”
He deliberately leaned back in his chair and switched to a businesslike tone, as if he hadn’t just confessed anything. “What I mean is this,” he said. “It’s a win-win strategy.”,
“A strategy?” My brain lagged behind.
“Yes,” Prince Adam said seriously, spinning a very neat story. “My father is forcing a bonding ceremony. If you refuse, you’ll be pushed toward Uncle Niall. As for me, I’m being pressured too. He wants me to marry for politics. But … I already have someone in my heart.”
“You do?” My gossip radar turned on. Most of my fear faded.
“Yes.” Prince Adam looked sad and gazed out the window, like he was/remembering a tragic past. “She was my first love. We met as children. She was kind and gentle by nature. But she found her destined mate and married far away. I swore I would never love anyone else.”
I
Diana tilted her head. “Cindy, he’s lying. His heartbeat is off. Also, I kind of want to laugh.”
I ignored Diana. Somehow, I believed him.
It explained why Prince Adam had stayed single for so many years. It also explained why he confessed and then pulled back. He needed a shield.
“So, Your Highness means…” I asked carefully.
“A fake bond.” Prince Adam turned back to me, his eyes clear and sincere. “You need someone with high status to block Uncle Niall and my father. I need someone strong enough to silence my father so I don’t have to marry women I don’t want. In the entire kingdom, only you can help me. And only I can help you.
“We would pretend to be a loving couple in public. In private, we’re partners. No interference. Full respect. After a few years, when things settle down or if you want to leave-we can-”
“No.”

I cut him off.
Prince Adam blinked. “No?”
His plan sounded perfect. But could a fake bond really fool King Ryken?
“I can accept a real bond,” I said, meeting his eyes. My voice was steady. “I do need a way out of my situation. But I have conditions.”
“Tell me.” Prince Adam sat up straight.
“A bond is for life.” I clenched my fist, nails digging into my palm. “I’ve been abandoned once. Betrayed once. I won’t go through that again. Once we swear in the Moon Goddess Temple and exchange markings, I will never sever our bond.
