King Ryken raised an eyebrow, looking not surprised at all. “Oh? Weren’t you against this before? What changed? Did you change your mind?”
“I didn’t want an arranged bond,” I said calmly. “But I met the Duchess of Silverpeak in private. We get along well and share the same values. I’m willing to give up my command of the army for her and live a quiet life. I ask for your blessing.”
King Ryken stared at the scepter for a long time.
We both knew what this meant.
Giving up military command also meant giving up my right to inherit the throne.
At last, he picked up the scepter and gently ran his fingers along it. A real smile appeared on his face.
“Very well,” he said with a sigh, sounding moved. “It’s rare to see such devotion. If you’re willing to give up the army, how could I refuse without seeming cruel? Cindy’s background has a few flaws, but she’s a pillar of the realm. Your union would also help carry on the Silverpeak bloodline.”
“Thank you, Father.” I bowed.
“I’ll draft the approval at once and announce the marriage-
་་
“No,” I cut in. “Father, I hope we can keep this low-key. Cindy just went through the breaking of a bond, and the Duskfang Pack stirred up enough trouble already. This isn’t the right time for a grand celebration. Please issue only a private approval. We’ll hold a simple ceremony, following werewolf tradition.”
It was to protect Cindy and to give my mother less time to interfere.
King Ryken gave me a knowing look. “You’re very protective of her. Fine. As you wish.”
The weight in my chest finally eased.
Just as I turned to leave, King Ryken spoke darkly again. “Adam, you’ve cleared me. But have you thought about how you’ll explain this to your mother? She already had her eye on a duke’s daughter and was preparing to arrange your bond.”
I stopped, turned back, and smiled brightly.
“You don’t need to worry, Father. I believe Cindy will give Mother a surprise.”
When I stepped out of the study and saw the deep blue sky, I let out a long breath.
Losing the right to inherit the throne didn’t matter. My father still had centuries ahead of him.
But if my wife ran off, I wouldn’t get another chance in this lifetime.

The east wing of the palace belonged to the queen; it was k
as the Rose Palace.
It should have been filled with the scent of expensive rose essential oils and the soft sweetness unique to omegas. Instead, the air was sharp and suffocating. It carried the sour edge of powerful pheromones released in extreme anger, like spoiled red wine-strong and stinging.
Crash!
A fine vase from the southern kingdoms shattered at my feet. Shards fler

and scraped against my boots.
My mother, the most honored woman in the kingdom, stood in the center of the velvet carpet, all
composure gone.
Her neatly styled hair was slightly undone. Her chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. The proud eyes that usually looked down on everyone were wide open now, locked on me.
“I tolerated her refusing Niall!” she screamed, her voice echoing under the high ceiling. “He’s useless anyway! But you really plan to marry that Cindy? A woman who’s
Deen marked by another male and then thrown aside like trash? You’re the crown prince! The future king! What
ere you thinking?”
