A royal messenger stood in the main hall, dressed in a red-and-gold uniform. He held a scroll sealed in gold, chin lifted high as if looking down on everyone.

“By order of Queen Isabella,” he announced, “Duchess Cindy of Silverpeak is invited to the palace tomorrow at noon to attend a formal audience and receive instruction in court etiquette.”

After the messenger left, the mood in the hall turned heavy.

“This is clearly a trap,” Diana said, narrowing her eyes. “That Queen Isabella never liked us. Cindy, if you go, she’ll make things hard for you.”

“Lessons in etiquette?” Tom frowned. “That sounds like trouble. These sessions usually include standing as punishment, memorizing endless rules, and sometimes even verbal insults.”

Everyone looked worried. I paused while wiping down my long blade! With a sharp clang, I slid it back into its sheath.

“What’s there to be afraid of?”

I picked up an apple from the fruit tray and took a loud bite. A careless smile curved my lips. “If she talks nicely, I’ll sit and have tea with her. If she wants to scare me…” I shrugged. “Worst case, I tear down her palace. I’m a duchess, and I’m Prince Adam’s fiancée. She wouldn’t dare to throw me into a dungeon.”

“Ms. Cindy!” Tom went pale in fright. “You can’t say things like that! That’s the royal palace!”

“Haha, I’m joking.” I patted his shoulder, but there wasn’t much humor in my eyes.

I’m going there to be bonded, not to be bullied.

“Don’t worry,” Jewel said suddenly, speaking with calm confidence as she organized her herbs nearby. “Ms. Cindy will be fine. Don’t forget, inside that palace, the woman who truly holds power isn’t Queen Isabella.”

She pointed toward the deeper part of the palace grounds. “Queen Mother liked the werewolf with strong principles.”

Prince Adam’s POV:

I passed through layers of royal gardens and arrived at Stillwater Palace, hidden deep within the palace grounds.

There was no gold or glitter here. Only old stone walls covered in vines and a neat garden of healing herbs.

An elderly woman with silver hair sat in a rocking chair. Her face was kind and calm. She held a pair of scissors and was trimming a rare flower.

She was my grandmother, the former queen, mate of the late King Ryken, and now the Queen Mother.

“Adam, you’re here,” she said without looking up. Her voice was gentle, yet steady enough to calm anyone. “I hear you threw quite a fit with your mother.”

“Grandma, you know everything,” I said with a small smile. I walked over and crouched beside her like I used to as a child, handing her the scissors. “I had no choice. Mother, she has too much prejudice against Cindy.”

“Prejudice?” Elizabeth paused. Her cloudy but sharp eyes looked at me. “Is it because the girl was once bonded? Or because she is too strong, and that makes your mother feel threatened?”

“Both, I suppose.” I sighed. “Mother plans to summon Cindy to the palace tomorrow. I’m afraid she’ll go too far. And knowing Cindy’s temper, I’m also afraid Cindy might anger her badly.”

“Hahaha!” Grandmother suddenly laughed, bright and open. “I haven’t met that girl, but I’ve heard plenty. Fighting alone through Southreach territory? She’s a fine one. A wild rose like that was never meant to be controlled by a greenhouse flower like your mother. She can’t handle her.”

She set the scissors down and patted my head. “Don’t worry. I’ll have people watching tomorrow. If that girl catches my eye, I’ll stand behind her. In this palace, no one dares to mess with someone I care about.”

“Thank you, Grandma.”

“And this as well.” She pointed to the table beside her, covered with rare bottles and vials. “These are Dragonblood Elixir and Lunar Elixir. I had them taken from the vault. That girl just came back from war. Her body must be badly drained. These strengthen the body and restore vitality. Much better than those supplements your mother likes; those things only make people look pretty.”

My chest warmed as I looked at the priceless elixirs.

This was what a true elder cared about-life and health, not hollow pride.

“Take them to her,” the Queen Mother said with a smile. “Tell her to recover properly. I’m still waiting to hold my great-grandchild.”
