On the day I was summoned to the palace, I stepped through the gates but didn’t go straight to see Queen Isabella, who clearly hated me. Instead, I turned toward Stillwater Palace to pay my respects to the Queen Mother first.

The old lady looked energetic. She sat in a rocking chair, sipping flower tea.

When she saw me, her well-worn eyes curved into a warm smile.

“Child, come here,” the Queen Mother said, waving me over and having a maid bring me a cushioned chair. “I knew you would come. I’ve already heard about it. That foolish woman is bubbling in rage in Rose Palace, planning to give you a hard time.”

I smiled and gave a proper curtsy, calm and respectful, without showing any

fear.

“She is Prince Adam’s mother, and she rules the royal court,” I said evenly, as if stating a routine matter. “If I am going to bond with Prince Adam, this is unavoidable.”

Elizabeth sighed and set down her teacup. She looked at me for a long moment, with the kind of concern only an elder shows a child who has suffered.

“I wanted to keep you here,” she said gently. “Or summon you to the garden instead. If I were present, she wouldn’t do anything to you. You’re a good girl and a hero of the nation. You don’t deserve that kind of treatment.”

“I appreciate your kindness, Your Majesty,” I said, shaking my head and meeting her gaze. My voice was steady. “But if I hide behind you today, she will think I am weak and easy to bully. She might even accuse me of using your power against her. That would only make my future with Your Highness harder, besides it would hurt your relationship with Queen Isabella. Since I must face her sooner or later, I’d rather do it myself.”

The Queen Mother studied me for a long time. Then she nodded with clear approval.

“Good. You have real backbone,” she said. “No wonder Adam chose you. Go on. If you’re wronged, come back and tell me. I’ll stand up for you.”

After thanking the Queen Mother, I left Stillwater Palace with Jewel.

The moment we stepped outside, a maid in a pink uniform approached us.

“Duchess of Silverpeak, Her Majesty has been waiting for you at Rose Palace,” she said with her head lowered. Her voice was flat. She never looked up, her eyes fixed on the ground, as if she didn’t dare meet

mine.

The heat that day was intense.

The sun burned overhead like a giant fireball, and the stone paths felt as if they were steaming.

As an alpha, my body was strong. This level of heat didn’t bother me much.

But Jewel, walking beside me, was an omega with a weaker build. Before long, her face turned pale. Sweat poured down her forehead like beads sliding off a snapped string.
