The great hall was kept uncomfortably cold. The air felt sharp against my skin, and I found myself tensing without meaning to.
Queen Isabella sat high above me on a jewel-studded throne. She wore an elaborate royal gown, layers upon layers of fabric.
From where she sat, she looked down at me with open dislike, as if I were an intruder who never should have been allowed inside.
I didn’t react to her stare. I followed court etiquette, dropped to one knee, and gave a clean military salute.
“Cindy Spencer,” I said evenly. “Pay respect to Your Majesty.”
My movements were precise. My voice was calm, neither humble nor defiant.
Queen Isabella gave a cold snort. “You may rise. You really do move like a soldier-stiff and rough. Not a trace of grace. No wonder the Duskfang Pack cast you aside.”
I stood up and lowered my eyes, pretending I hadn’t heard the last part.
That only seemed to irritate her more. She suddenly stood and walked down the steps, her heels clicking sharply against the floor, until she stopped right in front of me.
A strong wave of rose-scented pheromones slammed into me head-on. It was aggressive, pressing down hard.
A weaker werewolf would have been struggling to breathe.
Mine met the pressure head-on. My pheromones were cold and steady, like snowfields and steel. It held firm. I didn’t even frown.
“So,” she said, reaching out. Her long nails lifted my chin. Her eyes were full of malice. “I didn’t look closely last time. You’re nothing special. Why would Adam choose someone like you?”
It was a clear insult. I stepped back, out of her reach, my expression unchanged. “Your Majesty, please keep your distance,”
“Keep my distance?” She laughed sharply, her voice rising, “You think someone like you gets to lecture me? Today, I’ll teach you what rank really means, on behalf of your dead parents.”
She raised her hand and swung at my face.
The slap was meant to hurt. I could feel the force behind it, mixed with a trace of the wolf power of Omega. She wanted to leave a mark.
Her hand never landed.

I caught her wrist midair. My gloved hand closed around it like a steel clamp.
I looked at her, while inside, I fought to hold furious Diana back.

“Your Majesty,” I said quietly. My voice was calm but icy. “I strongly advise you not to strike me. My wolf spirit is named Diana. She has a very bad temper and a strong fight response. If someone tries to hit me, she may lose control and go for the throat.”
Queen Isabella struggled, but she couldn’t break free.
Her face twisted with anger and embarrassment. She shrieked, “How dare you! Guards! Beat her! Beat her to death!”
A side door flew open. A burly male servant rushed in.
He was clearly a gamma-huge, thick-bodied, with a brutal look in his eyes. This was someone clearly used to carrying out punishment.
“Slap her,” Queen Isabella shouted, pointing at me. “Don’t stop until her mouth is ruined!”
The man grinned and rolled up his sleeves as he charged forward.
Relying on his size, he swung his arm in a wide arc, the slap cutting through the air toward my face.
I released Queen Isabella’s wrist. I didn’t move. I didn’t dodge.
Just as that massive hand was about to touch my cheek-
