Chapter 147 Queen Isabella’s Little Game
Cindy’s POV:
Queen Isabella stood less than three feet from me. Her whole body froze.

Her eyes went wide. First, she stared at the unconscious male servant on the floor. Then she looked at me. I was standing there calmly, not a hair out of place.
Her face turned pale in an instant. Her knees gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor. Her body began to shake uncontrollably.
I slowly adjusted my gloves. Then, I looked down at her and spoke in the same calm tone as before.
“Your Majesty, I warned you. Diana doesn’t have a very good temper.”
Queen Isabella sat on the floor, her royal gown spread around her like a crushed flower after a storm.
She looked up at me. Her lips trembled. She seemed to want to call for help, but no sound came out.
Her face was ghostly white. Her eyes were full of terror.
“Y-you…” She finally forced out the words. Her finger shook as she pointed at me. “You dare hurt someone in the royal palace.”
“You misunderstand, Your Majesty.” I sounded calm, even a little innocent. “This was my wolf spirit’s automatic defense. It acted to protect its host. That counts as self-defense. After all, I can’t control its instinct to protect me.”
I even reached out, politely, to help her up.
She recoiled sharply in fear. Scrambling backward, she pushed herself up with her hands and feet and retreated several steps. Only when she felt far enough away did her breathing begin to steady.
She took a few deep breaths and forced herself to stand straight again, trying to regain her usual air of authority.
“Cindy,” she said through clenched teeth, “don’t think brute strength gives you the right to run wild in the palace. Someone like you is not fit to join the royal family. Have you forgotten what you promised me before? You swore you would never bond again and that you only wanted to serve the country. And now? You turn around and seduce my son. You liar who goes back on her word!”
My face remained flat. “Your Majesty, that was then, and this is now. At the time, I truly had no interest in marriage. But this engagement was proposed by Prince Adam himself, and it was approved by King Ryken. As a subject, I must obey the king’s command. As a woman, I was moved by Prince Adam’s sincerity. How is that deception?”
“Don’t hide behind the King to pressure me!” She snapped, her chest rising and falling sharply. “Look in a mirror and see who you really are. A woman who once broke her bond, low birth, with no family left alive. What makes you worthy of a noble prince? You’re out of your league!”

“My status?” I raised an eyebrow. “Your Majesty, may I remind you that I am a Grand Duchess personally appointed by King Ryken? In the entire kingdom, aside from you and the Queen Mother, no woman holds a higher title than mine. When it comes to rank, I don’t think I’m beneath anyone.”
She choked on her words. Her face darkened. Her eyes darted around, and then she suddenly changed tactics. “Hmph. You think I don’t know what you’re planning. You want to use my don to get revenge on the Duskfang Pack, don’t you? You want to use the royal family to crush the people who once bullied you. You scheming, poisonous woman!”
I laughed, but the smile was cold and never reached my eyes.
“Your Majesty, you think far too highly of the Duskfang Pack and far too little of me.” I lightly tapped my fingernail against the table. “If I wanted revenge, I wouldn’t need anyone’s help. With my current power and authority, crushing the Duskfang family would be as easy as stepping on an ant. The reason I haven’t acted is simple. They aren’t worth it. My blade is for killing enemies, not trash.”
