“Her Majesty has arrived.”

At the attendant’s announcement, I straightened my spine and entered the grand hall with my head held high, surrounded by my ladies-in-waiting.

For this occasion, I had deliberately chosen a gown woven with gold thread, brilliant and dazzling, more than enough to blind these impoverished nobles.

Lately, Prince Adam and that woman Cindy had angered me to the point of physical pain, but at an event like this, I couldn’t show weakness. I had to uphold the dignity of a queen, the mother of the realm.

Yet what greeted me wasn’t the enthusiastic applause and bows I had expected, but an awkward, heavy silence hanging in the air.

Princess Margaret stood at the center of the hall. She didn’t even incline her noble neck, let alone bow.

She regarded me lazily, a trace of contempt curling at her lips, making my skin crawl.

“Well, well. Queen Isabella,” she drawled, swirling the champagne in her glass. “I thought you might be unwell and unable to attend.”

I cursed inwardly.

This woman had always been my sworn enemy. A staunch believer in bloodline supremacy, she had never once looked at me with respect.

In her eyes, I was nothing more than an Omega born to a merchant/family-an accident chosen by a Ryken king, a woman who rose only because of her womb and was useful for nothing beyond bearing children.

My smile stiffened, but I forced myself to walk over, maintaining à veneer of composure. “It is my elder sister’s birthday. How could I not come? I have prepared a special gift for you.”

I lifted my hand. At once, a guard stepped forward carrying a redwood tray draped in white silk.

Before everyone present, I pulled away the cloth.

The tray was filled to the brim with neatly stacked gold bars, gleaming brilliantly.

Solid, tangible wealth.

Chosen with care from my private reserves.

But the gasps of admiration I had anticipated never came. Instead, a low, grating ripple of laughter spread through the hall.

“My goodness, how vulgar.”

“Gold bars, just like that? Something only a nouveau riche would do.”

Princess Margaret’s daughter, my dear niece Lily, even covered her mouth dramatically as she laughed. “Aunt Isabella, did you bring the treasury with you? Our family may not be wealthy, but this is a bit too honest. There’s no artistic refinement at all. It would take up space even in the vault.”

My face burned as if I had been slapped in public.

I came from a merchant family. To me, money was the most sincere and practical gift. How was I supposed to understand the twisted notions of so-called artistic taste that these old noble families prized?

“Lily, mind your manners when speaking to your elders,” Princess Margaret scolded perfunctorily. The amusement in her eyes, however, was impossible to hide. She looked as though she were watching a circus. act. “But don’t take it to heart, sister-in-law. An Omega’s perspective is always limited. Aside from money and children, you rarely have any other pursuits.”
