Prince Adam looked at me and let out a relieved smile. “The bone’s back in place. That kid… he’s really tough. After that first cry, he didn’t make a sound.”
The moment I heard him say “it’s done,” I broke down in a wave of muffled sobs-tears of relief and joy.
I couldn’t hold myself back anymore. I rushed past Prince Adam and ran into the room.
The air was thick with the smell of blood and medicine.
Astra lay quietly on the bed, his right leg already set with a heavy splint and layers of gauze, hoisted high.
He was still unconscious. His face was pale as a sheet, and his hair was soaked and plastered to his forehead, as if he’d just come out of water.
Even in sleep, his brow was tightly furrowed-a shadow of pain still lingering there.
Dr. Rupert was packing up. When he saw me, he put a finger to his lips in a hush.
“I gave him something to help him sleep. Let him rest. This is the best way for him to recover.”
I walked softly to the bedside and knelt down.
My hands shook as I reached out. I smoothed his furrowed brow, then held his small hand. His grip finally relaxed, though bits of Prince Adam’s flesh still lingered under his nails!
My tears Splattered, one by one, hitting the back of his hand.
“Don’t cry.”
Diana’s voice sounded especially gentle right then. “Look at his leg. That’s a straight leg. From today on, he’s not a crippled beggar anymore-he’s a warrior on the mend. Cindy, every bit of pain was a medal for this outcome.”
I looked up at Prince Adam, who was still standing in the doorway.
He leaned against the doorframe, refusing Roger’s offer to bandage his hand.
His gaze cut through the people and landed on me, soft and warm.
Once Dr. Rupert had left, the room finally fell quiet once again.
Astra had slipped into a deep sleep. His breathing was still a bit fast, but his brow had finally smoothed out.
The medicine was working, and that leg that had just endured so much was now wrapped in white gauze, suspended in the air.

I turned and looked at Prince Adam.
He was pulling on his black coat, acting all casual. But when he lifted his right arm, I caught the tiniest pinch in his brow.
“Wait.”
I hurried over and grabbed his hand before he could stop me.
The black fabric might have been dirt-resistant, but now the cuff was soaked, the blood dried to a dark purplish-black.
“It’s nothing.” Prince Adam tried to pull away, flashing me that forced, easy smile I hated. “Just a scratch. Don’t forget, I’m Ryken-this kind of cut scabs over in half an hour.”
