The Abandoned Luna's Journey to Power (by Emily Reed) novel Chapter 227

Chapter 227 A Lifetime

Cindy’s POV:

Prince Adam turned his face away, seeming a little embarrassed, but his voice came out firm as ever. “Because you are my mate. In this world, no one but me has the right to treat you well. We’re going to spend our whole lives together.”

A lifetime…

The word felt like a thorn, piercing into the deepest, most hidden wound in my heart.

I lowered my head, watching the tea leaves swirl in my cup, and said quietly, “I’ve heard those exact words before. A few years back, someone else made the same promise-to spend a lifetime with me and grow old together. And we all know how that turned out.”

That was James’s promise to me-the dream he crushed with his own hands.

The atmosphere in the room turned cold in a blink.

Prince Adam whipped his head around, fury burning in those golden eyes-not at me, but at the name I had just mentioned.

“Don’t compare me to that loser.”

Prince Adam’s voice was low and dangerous. “The Ryken are not like those fickle, low-rank werewolves. Once our souls choose a mate, that bond is for life. Loyalty is hardwired into our genes.”

He reached out, forced my chin up, and locked eyes with me.

“Cindy, unless you die, or I die, you’re not getting rid of me in this life. I’ll spend the rest of my time proving to you that a Ryken’s vow weighs more than any throne.”

I stared at him, stunned.

That word “die” sent a shiver through my heart.

“You can’t die.” The words slipped out as a strange panic bubbling up in me. “If you die first, am I supposed to grow old alone?”

Prince Adam paused, then burst out laughing.

“Idiot.” He tapped my nose, his eyes full of affection. “Rykens live twice as long as ordinary werewolves. If you want to talk about it, odds are you’ll be a wrinkled granny and I’ll just be a dashing old man. When that time comes, I’ll wheel you out for sunshine every day and tell you stories about when we were young.”

I couldn’t help but laugh through my tears. “Keep dreaming!

“Pfft!”

Jewel, who’d been standing in the corner the whole time, finally cut in. She walked over with a tray, looking

thoroughly disgusted. “Your Highness, Ms. Spencer, your wedding is almost here. Don’t talk about dying- it’s bad luck! Rinse it out with some tea, quick!”

Prince Adam and I exchanged a glance, and all the heaviness between us disappeared, replaced by awkward, sweet, pink bubbles.

Our eyes met midair.

This time, I didn’t look away.

My heart thudded in my chest, pounding like a wild deer desperate to escape its cage.

“Just admit it.”
