I sat inside the carriage covered in gold leaf, listing to the thunderous horn echoing in the distance. My face instantly turned ashen.

“Is that the charge horn of the royal knights?” I asked my maid in a trembling voice,

Her face looked just as bad. “Yes… yes, Madam. heard… I heard Prince Adam is coming to the city gate to fetch the bride. Everyone in the kingdom has rushed over there. They want to watch the prince welcome his bride.”

The bouquet in my hands was already crushed out of shape.

I had thought that James coming early to fetch me and even choosing the Grand Cathedral as the place for the vows was already the greatest honor in the kingdom-something no one else could match.

But I never imagined that Prince Adam-as the crown prince and a noble Alpha-would also break tradition in his first marriage and go even further than James. He had directly summoned the royal knights!

“Isn’t he afraid of being impeached by the coune? Isn’t he afraid the King Ryken will scold him?” I murmured to myself, unable to hold down the wave of jealousy and shame rising in my heart.

I looked down at the expensive yet gaudy jewels on my body, then thought about the grand scene on Cindy’s side.

“Forget it…” I took a deep breath and forced the Bitterness in my chest back down. Pulling the gold-embroidered veil over my face, I said, “Let go. Since we can’t compete, there’s no need to embarrass ourselves. We’ll take the side gate.”

Cindy’s POV:

At the gate of the kingdom.

My makeup was finally finished.

“Put this on.”

Fern picked up the “breath-veil,” woven with threads of mithril, from a tray.

It was an ancient magical fabric. Not only could block sight, but it could completely seal the bride’s scent until the moment of vows in the cathedral, when the groom would lift it and their scents would blend from then on.

“Thank you, Fern.” I closed my eyes and let the cool, silky veil fall over my face.

My vision blurred, and I could only faintly see the red carpet beneath my feet and the hem of my dress.

“Let’s go.”

Dean Dross’s voice sounded beside my car.

He walked to my side and extended his rough, calloused arm, signaling for me to hold it.

“Cindy,” he said.

As we walked toward the carriage, this old dean usually hot-tempered and blunt-suddenly spoke in a low voice filled with the bittersweet tone of a father.

“In the future… be a little more gentle. Even though you’re an Alpha, once you’re married and have a mate, you need to learn to control your temper. Prince Adam may be tough, but if you mess with him every day, even he’ll hit his limit.”

Holding his arm, my eyes grew warm. “Dean, I don’t…”

“Listen to me.” Dross cut me off. “Back then, when you insisted on marrying that brat James, I actually didn’t agree. Reginald and I even talked about shutting the academy gates and refusing to let you leave to marry him, just to protest that unreliable match.”

I turned my head in shock. Even though I couldn’t see his expression through the veil, I could feel the stiffness in the muscles of his arm

“At that time, Reginald-that crow-mouthed man-said something.”

Dross sighed, his voice carrying a helpless sense of fate. “He said, ‘We can’t stop her. This girl’s destiny carries fire and blood. She is meant to bear two marks. The first is a calamity. The second is her destiny.”

My whole body trembled.

Two marks…

James’s mark was my calamity, and Adam’s mark… was my destiny?

“At the time, I wanted to beat him for saying such a curse,” Dross said with a bitter smile. T never expected it would come true. You did suffer-but you were also reborn through fire.”
