Chapter 81 Ambitions

Spike’s POV:

This was complete nonsense. Absolute nonsense.

Why was Cindy even fighting that unhinged woman?

“Your Highness, this is madness!” I couldn’t stop myself from complaining to Adam. “Cindy brought massive credit to our side. Everyone knows she deserves command of the Gamma Guard. Why agree to Evelyn’s duel for no reason?”

Adam reclined in the main seat, lazily rolling the wolf command token between his fingers. The smile on his lips revealed nothing.

“Spike, do you think Cindy will lose?”

“Not a chance!” I shot back. “She was personally trained by the old general and ranked at the top of the academy. Evelyn is half-baked at best. She’s not even worthy of shining Cindy’s boots.”

“Then what’s the concern?” Adam stood and walked over to me. “You’ve heard the talk spreading through the ranks. That fool Evelyn keeps shouting that Cindy rose through connections. Even some fresh recruits are starting to doubt. If we don’t use this moment to draw a clear line, how will Cindy command the Gamma Guard? How will she silence everyone?”

I froze for a moment before understanding dawned on me. This duel was staged with a foregone conclusion, meant to wash Cindy’s name clean and completely break those stubborn reinforcements.

“But…” I still hesitated. “What if that lunatic pulls some underhanded trick?”

“Against overwhelming strength, tricks are meaningless,” Adam said/dismissively. “Go prepare the grounds. This duel will not just happen, it will be a spectacle. Clean, decisive and loud enough to shut every mouth.”

James’ POV:

Evelyn’s tent felt suffocating, the pressure inside so thick it was hard to breathe.

“You’re really going through with it?” I watched her polish her sword, the familiar ache tightening in my

chest.

“Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I?” She didn’t look up as cold light slid along the blade. “This is my one chance to flip everything. If I win, the Gamma Guard is mine. After that, I’ll walk tall in the Royal Court.”

“You can’t win,” I said quietly, finally voicing the truth I had been avoiding. “Evelyn, you’ve never seen the real power of Silverpeak. I have. In Northmere, I watched Benjamin tear apart a marquis-level vampire like it was nothing. Cindy inherited that bloodline. That kind of power cannot be matched.”

Evelyn spun on me, her eyes dripping with ridicule. “Did you fall for that little performance Kenzi put on? Do you even know what Cindy is like at home? She does embroidery. Her skills are a joke. At best, she can rough up a few street thugs. And Kenzi was obviously paid off by Adam to pretend he got blown away.”

“No, it wasn’t staged,” I said urgently. “I saw the rip in the ground. It wasn’t fake.”

“Enough!” Evelyn shrieked, cutting me off. “Why do you keep defending Cindy? Still hung up on that discarded woman? Regretting that you married me?”
