Chapter 82 Embarassment

Cindy’s POV:

The noon sun burned down, harsh and blinding. The training grounds were already overflowing.

It was not just the Southreach forces and the reinforcements. Even wandering wolves from nearby and a few bold merchants had come to watch.

A Sacred Duel had not taken place in the Southreach for years, and this one featured two female generals with grudges. Who would stay away?

I stood at the center of the platform, completely composed.

Viola and Forrest waited below, barely holding themselves back from charging up to spill blood on my behalf.

Evelyn arrived.

She wore a blazing red set of armor and carried a long, shining sword. A small group of supporters followed close behind, shouting encouragement.

“Cindy!” She stepped onto the platform and began yelling, “Don’t think having Prince Adam behind you means you can act however you like! Today, in front of the entire army, I’ll expose you. You’re nothing more than a woman living off her father and brother with no real ability!”

A wave of noise swept through the crowd.

Viola nearly lashed out on the spot, but Tyrone pulled her back in time.

“Relax. Just watch Cindy crush her,” Tyrone said, chewing on a blade of grass with a grin full of trouble.

I looked at Evelyn the way one might look at a street clown begging for coins.

“Enough talk,” I said evenly. “Let’s begin.”

Prince Adam, acting as arbiter, stepped onto the platform.

He glanced at me, then turned to take a simple wooden staff from the weapon rack and tossed it in my direction.

“Catch,” Adam said, his voice calm yet carrying clearly, “Your wolf spirit Diana burns too fiercely. To prevent you from killing her by accident, use this.”

The entire field erupted.

A staff against a sword? Was he mocking Evelyn, or treating the duel as a farce?

I caught the staff and weighed it in my hand. It was light as a feather.

But I understood Adam’s intent.

Evelyn was despicable, yes, but she was Franklin’s target.

If I killed her here, it would disrupt the border in all the worst ways.

“Fine,” I said with a nod.

Evelyn’s face flushed a dark, ugly purple.

“This is outrageous!” She laughed in rage. “Perfect! If you want to die so badly, I will grant your wish! Do not think swinging a broken stick makes you impressive!”

“Kill!”

She stopped talking and shouted, her sword screaming as it cut through the wind straight at my face.

She poured all her strength into that strike.

As a full-time Gamma fighter, her speed was exceptional. The blade flashed like lightning.

Gasps spread through the crowd.

I did not retreat. I stepped forward and lifted the wooden staff as if it weighed nothing.

Clang!

The impact rang out like metal crashing against metal.

The staff that should have shattered under her blade did not even crack.

Worse still for her, a violent shock traveled straight back along the sword.

Evelyn’s hand jolted and the blade nearly flew free as she stumbled back three steps.

“How is that possible?” Her eyes bulged as she stared at the staff. “Did you hide an iron core inside it? That weapon is rigged!”

“Rigged?”

I gave a cold laugh.

“Use your eyes and look properly.”

I gripped one end of the staff with my left hand and tightened my fingers.

Crack!

The thick wooden staff snapped cleanly in my bare hand, revealing jagged splinters of ordinary poplar.

I tossed the broken half onto the ground.

“Satisfied now?”

Evelyn’s face drained of color, yet she was still in denial.

“You are just strong! That proves nothing! A real werewolf fights using wolf spirit power!”
