The Abandoned Luna's Journey to Power (by Emily Reed) novel Chapter 9

Chapter 9 The Hunt of the Arrogant

James’s POV:

After I left Evelyn in a quiet courtyard at the edge of our pack’s land, I finally felt a flicker of

peace.

She was smart. Though she wasn’t exactly happy about me insisting she keep her distance from Cindy for now, she followed my orders without a fuss.

We had made love again. Her wolf spirit burned strong and fierce, and between us lay a silent bond forged in battles fought side by side. That only confirmed what I’d already known: She was the one meant to stand with me and lead the Duskfang Pack as Luna.

I’d planned to just give her a few quick instructions and leave, but her scent pulled me in so deeply that I stayed the night.

By the time I returned to the Moonwhisper Residence, where Cindy and I used to live, it was already the next afternoon. The familiar, crisp chill that always marked Cindy’s presence hit me right away.

But the house was empty.

Where is everyone?I frowned, feeling my wolf spirit stir uneasily inside.

An Omega servant shook as he reported, AAlpha, LunaI mean, Cindy and her maid Jewel disappeared not long after you left.”

Disappeared? A flicker of irritation sparked in me, but I pushed it aside.

Where could Cindy have gone? We were tied by that fated mate bond. No matter where she went, I could always sense her.

I figured this was just a childish tantrum to get my attention, to force me to come after her and apologize.

Hmph, she’s so full of herself,Kenzi, my wolf spirit, sneered inside my mind. She’ll come back once she’s tired of struggling.

Still, Cindy being gone wasn’t entirely bad. It gave me a chance to bring Evelyn home and introduce her to Grandma and the others.

Over the next few days, Evelyn moved in openly

Without Cindy around to get in the way, she quickly won over the family, even though her status hadn’t been officially announced to the rest of the pack yet.

One afternoon, just after leaving Evelyn’s room, I was getting ready to take care of some pack business. Her role needed to be made public soon, which meant a ceremony was on the horizon.

At that moment, my sister, Hannah Nolan, rushed in.

She was a sharp Beta who handled personnel for the pack.

James, the warriorsgear is falling apart. We should order new sets, but we’re short on funds.”

Without looking back, I said, Go ask Cindy for money. She still has plenty left from her inheritance

Then I rememberedCindy wasn’t here.

That foolish woman, sulking over some petty fight and ignoring the pack’s needs!

I’ll go drag her back. That stubborn woman!I growled. Thanks to our bond, I could easily pinpoint her location.

Hannah’s face changed. James, I think Cindy said something about going to the Royal Court.

The Royal Court?I spun around sharply. My wolf spirit tensed, and a wave of furious energy surged through me.

What was she doing at the Royal Court?!

She’s probably trying to convince King Ryken to revoke Evelyn’s appointment! She’s trying to reclaim her Luna spot!Kenzi snarled angrily. That ungrateful fool! How dare she defy me and then run to the King to complain!

My rage flared hotter.

How could she be so arrogant and shortsighted?

Evelyn becoming Luna was what was best for the Duskfang Pack, for the Royal Court’s strategy in Northmere. It was my decision!

Even the Royal Court council had approved it! What right did Cindy have to interfere? Especially clinging to her pathetic, longgone Luna status?

Damn it!I shouted, losing my cool.

I wouldn’t let her ruin my plans. I wouldn’t let her badmouth me and Evelyn in front of King Ryken!

Without hesitation, I stormed out and let out a loud wolf howl in the courtyard. Instantly, I shifted into my massive, jetblack wolf form.

With powerful legs ready to explode with speed, I locked onto the Royal Court and launched forward like a streak of black lightning.

The wind whipped past my ears, trees flashing by in a blur. Only this breakneck pace could begin to ease the storm of anger raging inside me.

After a full night of running, my Alpha endurance carried me to the towering Royal Court just as dawn was breaking,

But what greeted me was a chilling disappointment.

When I gave my nameJames, Alpha of Duskfang Packand asked to see King Ryken, I was told, His Majesty is unwell today and cannot receive visitors.

He wouldn’t see me? No way! I was one of the kingdom’s brightest young Alphas, fresh off major victories. King Ryken had no reason to deny me!

Even Morton, the Beta and King Ryken’s right hand, met me coldly in a side room. His usual warmth replaced by stiff politeness, he brushed me off with the excuse that His Majesty

must rest.

This was far from normal. My wolf spirit Kenzi paced anxiously inside me. A bad feeling settled deep in my gut.
