I stood atop the tallest clock tower in the inner city, staring down at a city on the verge of collapse.

The night wind brushed through my pale gray hair.

We had lost the battle, but I wasn’t worried.

War always ended with winners and losers. What mattered most was keeping what strength we still had.

“Lord Marshal.”

A vampire scout slipped up behind me like a shadow. “The target fell for it. The female werewolf in red armor led 300 troops into Echo Alley.”

“Good.” I turned, a trace of cold satisfaction flashing in my eyes. “That’s Evelyn, right? The one who tortured my nephew to death and wanted to hang his body on a flagpole?”

“Yes, we confirmed it. Her wolf spirit carries a disgusting stench, like rot on the wind.”

“Let’s end it.” My tone stayed even. “Tell Ivan she’s his prey. Keep her alive. The rest is up to him.”

“Yes, Lord Marshal.”

The scout was about to leave when he stopped again. “Lord Marshal, the hyena commander Victor sent an urgent message. He says if we can’t hold the city, we should burn it and kill all the werewolf slaves and civilians. Then we can fill the streets with bodies to slow Prince Adam’s chase.”

My grip tightened on the railing.

Victor … and those carrion-eating hyenas…

I replied coldly, “This is war, not a slaughter pit. We’re noble bloodkin, not mad dogs. Anyone who massacres civilians won’t need werewolves to kill them-I’ll cut them down myself.

“Send the order. All troops withdraw in formation. Leave the Third Legion to cover the retreat and let Prince Ivan settle his revenge. All other units pull out through the north gate and fall back to Howling

Barrens.”

I cast one last look at the silver figure charging in the distance-Cindy.

She was a worthy opponent.

“Evelyn, huh?” I murmured. “You think you’re chasing glory, but you’re running straight into hell. Some debts are paid only with blood.”

Cindy’s POV:

The battle was drawing to a close.

Just as Prince Adam predicted, the madman Victor tried to slaughter civilians during the retreat. Luckily, we reached them in time.

“Attack!”

Riding a massive wolf, I led the Gamma Guards into the western district.

“Anyone who lays down their weapons lives! Anyone who harms civilians dies!”

Already shaken, the hyena legion crumbled the moment we struck.
