She watched him disappear into the pack house before looking back at me. There wasn’t a trace of doubt in her expression. She had already begun seeing the same qualities in him that I had years before.
“I can see why.”
“So can I.”
Together, we stepped inside. The quiet hours were coming to an end, and before long every leader in Wraithbone would have a part to play. When the Eastern Council crossed our borders, we would be ready.
Pryor was already waiting outside my office with a folder tucked beneath one arm. Lira stood beside him while Raith finished giving a final instruction to one of the warriors assigned to the council wing. The warrior hurried away, and Raith turned his attention back to us. Everything was falling into place before the Council’s arrival.
As we approached, Isla’s steps became slower. She looked toward the council wing without saying anything, her attention fixed on something I couldn’t see. Raith noticed the change at the same time I did and remained where he was.
“Isla?”
She didn’t answer immediately.
“I don’t know why,” she said quietly. “Something doesn’t feel right.”
The corridor fell silent. I trusted her gift too much to dismiss those words.

I studied Isla’s face for another moment. She wasn’t frightened, but she wasn’t imagining it either. I’d learned to trust her gift long before I understood it. Every time she’d sensed something, there had been a
reason.
“What are you feeling?”
She kept her eyes on the council wing. She looked as though she was trying to listen to something only she could hear. After a moment, she shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Nobody spoke. Pryor and Lira exchanged a brief look while Raith remained where he was. I waited because rushing her wouldn’t change what she felt.
“It isn’t pain,” she continued. “It feels… wrong.”
Something doesn’t feel right
Pryor looked toward the corridor leading to the guest quarters. Everything had already been inspected Twice under his supervision. He looked back at Isla.
“The rooms have already been inspected.”
