He inclined his head before signaling two nearby warriors to follow him. They disappeared down the corridor without wasting a second. I looked back at Isla.
“Can you tell where it comes from?”
She closed her eyes for only a moment. When she opened them again, her attention returned to the corridor. She looked frustrated more than anything else.
“No.”
She drew in a quiet breath before meeting my eyes. I could see she wished she had a better answer. Unfortunately, this gift rarely gave us simple ones.
“It isn’t one place.”
Those words settled over all of us. I looked toward Lira before giving my next order. Until we understood what Isla had sensed, I wasn’t taking chances.
“No one enters or leaves the council wing until Raith returns.”
“It’ll be done, Alpha King.”
Lira left immediately, calling two warriors to her side as she headed toward the corridor. Pryor remained beside me, the folder still tucked beneath his arm. None of us spoke again as we waited for Raith to return with whatever he found.
The wait felt longer than it probably was. At last, Raith walked back into view with the two warriors beside him. One look at his face told me he hadn’t found what we were looking for.
“Alpha King.”
“Report.”
“We searched every room and every corridor. Nothing was out of place.”
Silence settled between us.
Something don’t feel right
Hurned to Isla.
She shook her head before I could ask.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet, but certain.
“Whatever I felt is still here.”
I looked toward the council wing again. Every report told me the same thing, yet Isla’s gift refused to agree. I trusted her gift more than any report placed in my hands.
“Pryor.”
“Alpha King?”
“Delay moving anything else into the council wing until morning.”
He inclined his head.
“It’ll be done.”
I looked at Raith.
“Keep the guards where they are.”
