The journal calls

(Isla)

Everyone moved as soon as Caius gave the order. Pryor left to inform the servants that nothing else was to be taken into the council wing until morning. Lira gathered more warriors and quietly adjusted the guards around the corridor. I stayed beside Caius while my eyes remained fixed on the same place.

I wanted the feeling to disappear. Instead, it stayed exactly where it had been since we stepped inside. It wasn’t stronger than before, but it wasn’t weaker either. That worried me more than I wanted to admit.

Caius looked at me.

Do you want to go closer?

I think I have to.

He didn’t argue. He reached for my hand, and I held on without thinking. Together, we walked toward the council wing while Raith fell into step a few feet behind us. The rest of the warriors remained where they had been ordered.

The corridor felt ordinary. The walls, windows, and doors looked exactly as they had this morning. Nothing appeared damaged or out of place. If I had walked through here yesterday, I wouldn’t have looked twice.

We stopped outside the council chamber.

Here?

I closed my eyes for a moment. The feeling brushed against me again before slipping away just as quickly. When I opened my eyes, I shook my head.

No.

We continued farther down the corridor. One guest room stood open after Raith’s search, and I looked inside as we passed. The furniture was untouched, and the bed had already been prepared for tomorrow’s guests. It looked like every other room in the pack house.

Caius watched me.

Anything?

No.

Another few steps carried us to the library. The two warriors guarding the door straightened as we approached before stepping aside to allow us through. Neither of them had seen anything unusual during their watch.

The library greeted us with complete silence. Shelves filled with old books surrounded us while the afternoon light reached through the tall windows. Everything rested exactly where it belonged Even so, the feeling returned the moment I crossed the doorway.

I stopped walking.

The journalentis

It’s here.

Caius looked around the room. Raith checked every corner without waiting to be told. Neither of them found anything that explained what I felt.

The books?

Caius asked the question because he akeady knew where my thoughts had gone. Ever since we found the journal, nothing involving old records felt ordinary anymore. I wished! could tell him he was wrong.

I don’t know.

I walked between the shelves, letting my hand brush lightly across the edge of the wooden cases. Nothing changed. Then I reached the table where the journal had rested earlier today.

I looked down at the empty surface.

It was here.

Caius stepped beside me.

The journal is in my office.

I looked toward the door. The feeling lessened again, though it didn’t disappear completely. It was almost as if whatever I sensed had followed the journal but left something behind.

I think we should look at it again.”

Raith looked at Caius.

I’ll secure the office.

Caius gave a single nod. Raith left immediately while the two warriors remained outside the library doors. No one questioned the decision because everyone understood how important the journal had become.

Caius turned back to me.

Can you walk?

Yes.

He kept hold of my hand as we left the library together. Pryor was already making his way back toward us after finishing his own task. He stopped as soon as he saw us.

Alpha King?

We’re returning to the office.

Pryor nodded once and fell into step beside us. None of us spoke during the short walk back. Every answer seemed to lead us toward the journal once again.

By the time we reached the office, Raith was already waiting outside the door with two warriors standing nearby. He opened the door as Caius approached before stepping aside. The journal rested exactly where we’d left it on the desk.

< The journalestie

The moment I saw it, the feeling returned.

It’s stronger now.”

Every eye turned toward the journal. No one reached for it

The room remained silent. Caius stepped closer to the desk without taking his eyes off the journal. Pryor and Raith stayed near the door while giving us enough space. No one wanted to disturb whatever was happening.

Tell me what you feel.

I looked at the journal again. My chest felt heavy, but it wasn’t fear. It was closer to standing outside a door that shouldn’t be opened while knowing someone expected you to walk through it anyway.

It wants us to look.

Caius looked at me.

The journal?

I think so.

He rested one hand on the edge of the desk. He didn’t touch the journal. He waited because he knew rushing me had never helped before.

What makes you think that?

I took another step closer. The closer I stood, the more the feeling settled around me. It wasn’t pushing me away. It was pulling me toward the pages.

It isn’t warning me to leave.

I looked at Caius.

It’s asking me to stay.”

No one spoke after that. Even Raith remained completely still behind us. The only sound came from the fire burning across the room.

Caius finally looked at Pryor.

Close the door.

Pryor did so immediately. The sound of the latch settling into place seemed louder than it should have.

We were alone now.

Caius turned back to me.

You don’t have to do this.

I know.
