The King’s Fate
The King’s fate
(Isla)
No one spoke.
Every eye remained fixed on the open journal. Caius stood beside me while Raith and Pryor waited a short distance away. None of us knew why the journal had opened on its own. We all understood that it meant something.
Caíus looked at me.
“Do you recognize the page?”
I stepped closer to the desk and lowered my eyes to the journal. The page looked older than the others we had already read. The writing had faded with age, but most of it was still clea enough to understand. A strange mark filled the top corner where no family crest should have been.
I studied the symbol before shaking my head. Nothing about it felt familiar to me. Even so, I couldn’t pull my attention away from it. It looked as though someone had placed it there for
reason.
“I’ve never seen that mark before.”
Caius leaned closer without touching the journal. Pryor moved to the other side of the desk so he could examine the page as well. Raith remained near the door while keeping watch over the hallway. None of them spoke as they studied what the journal had revealed.
Pryor looked at Caius.
“The writing matches the earlier pages.”
“It does.”
Caius looked back at me. Questions filled his eyes even though his expression remained calm. He always chose patience before action. It was one of the reasons I trusted him completely.
“Can you read it?”
“I think so.”

Nothing about it explained why the journal had opened to this page.
Then the ink began to move beneath my eyes.
One sentence disappeared as another took its place. More words changed until the passag no longer matched what I had been reading. None of the others reacted. I realized I was the only one who could see it.
“Celestial,”
The word left my mouth before I realized I had spoken. Pryor looked at me while Caius turne
his attention back to the page. Neither of them appeared to see what I had seen. Raith remained silent near the door.
“What did you say?” Pryor asked.
“The words changed.”
Caius looked down at the journal again. His eyes moved across the same lines I had just read. When he looked back at me, I already knew his answer. The page hadn’t changed for him.
“They haven’t changed for us.”
I looked at the journal again. The passage had already returned to what it had been before. The new words were gone as though they had never appeared. Only the symbol in the corner remained.
“I saw something else.”
“What did it say?” Caius asked.
“I only saw one word clearly.”
“Celestial?”
I nodded.
The feeling inside me returned before I could say anything else. It came from the journal and settled through my body. This time, there was no doubt about where it came from. The book wanted something from me.
I reached toward the page without thinking. My fingers stopped just above the parchment. Caius watched my hand before looking at my face. He didn’t try to stop me.
“It wants me to touch it.”
Calus’s name. Cold air rushed across my face.
I stood inside the council chamber.
It looked like the same chamber inside Wraithbone, but more wolves filled it than before Every one of them wore the robes of the Eastern Council. Some stood near the walls whie others gathered around the long table. Nobody seemed to notice me.
My eyes searched through the faces.
“Calus.
He stood several feet away with his sword in his hand. His attention remained fixed on the elders across from him. I tried to move toward him, but my feet refused to obey me. It felt as though the vision wanted me to watch.
One of the elders stepped forward.
“You should have listened.”
Caius didn’t lower his weapon. He looked exactly as he always did when danger stood before him. There was no fear in his face. His eyes never left the elder

anyone else moved, I screamed his name. The sound filled the chamber
“Caius!”
His sword fell from his hand. Blood spread across the front of his shirt as he dropped to of knee. The elder pulled his weapon free before stepping back. Nobody tried to stop him
I forced my feet forward.
This time, they obeyed me. I reached Caius before he fell completely and caught him in my arms. Blood covered my hands as I lowered him to the floor. The sight of it made it difficult to breathe.
“No.”
I pressed both hands against the wound. Tears fell onto his face as I begged him to stay wi me. His eyes found mine, but the life inside them was already disappearing. I could feel his pain through our bond.
“Please.”
The elder walked toward us again. He looked down at Caius before turning his attention to me. There was no regret in his face. His voice remained calm when he spoke.
“You should have stopped searching.”
He turned his head toward the council table. The journal lay open across its surface. Its pages remained still as though it had been waiting for this moment. The elder looked back at
