A future written in blood-1
(Calus)
I caught lala before she struck the floor. Her body went limp in my arms, and for one terri second she didn’t respond when I called her name. The journal remained open on the des beside us. I lowered her carefully while Raith moved closer.
“Send for Sera.”
Raith was already at the door before I finished speaking. He ordered one of the warriors outside to find her and bring her immediately. Pryor closed the journal without touching th page Isla had placed her hand against. I kept my attention on my mate.
“Isla.”
Her eyes remained closed. Her breathing came, but it was weaker than I wanted. I pressed my fingers against the side of her neck and found the beat there. Relief came, but it did litt to lessen the fear rising inside me.
Raith returned to my side.
“Sera is coming, Alpha King.”
“Clear the corridor.”
He left again without question. I lifted Isla into my arms and carried her toward the couch. near the fire. Pryor moved the cushions aside before I lowered her onto them. Her face had lost its color.
I knelt beside her and took her hand. Her fingers felt cold against mine. I could still feel our bond, but something inside it had changed. Fear and pain rushed through it in broken pieces.
“What happened to her?” Pryor asked.
“I don’t know.”
I looked toward the journal. It had opened for her and changed before her eyes. Whatever it showed her had been powerful enough to take her consciousness. I wanted to tear the book apart and demand every answer hidden inside it.
Sera entered moments later with Raith behind her. She carried her medical bag and came straight to Isla. I moved enough to give her space but refused to release Isla’s hand. Sera took one look at my face and didn’t waste time asking unnecessary questions.

“What happened?”
“She touched the journal.”
Sera checked Isla’s eyes before placing two fingers against her neck. She listened to her breathing and examined her hands. There were no wounds or burns where she’d touched the page. The only injury seemed to exist somewhere none of us could see.
“Did she say anything before she collapsed?”
“She called my name.”
I remembered the way she’d looked at me when the office returned around her. Terror had filled her face before her knees gave out. She hadn’t looked confused. She had looked as though she’d seen something she couldn’t escape.
Sera looked at me.
“Her body is responding as though she suffered a great shock.”
“Can you wake her?”
“I can try.”
She opened her bag and removed a small bottle. After placing a few drops on a cloth, she held it near Isla’s nose. Isla’s face moved for a second before becoming still again. Sera tried once more, but nothing changed.
“Why isn’t she waking?”
“Her body may be protecting her.”
“From what?”
“Whatever she saw.”
The answer angered me because it gave me nothing useful. I looked toward Pryor and found him watching the journal. Raith stood near the office door, keeping everyone else outside.

“That isn’t an answer.”
“It’s the only one I have.”
Her voice remained firm, and I forced myself to accept it. Sera had never hidden the truth from me, even when I disliked hearing it. If there were signs Isla was dying, she would have
