Chapter 114

“Let me out! I said let me out! Please…” My voice broke into sobs as I pounded weakly on the door, but no matter how long I cried or begged, no one came. No one ever did.

I dragged myself toward the corner of the cold room, as I curled up like a ball. I’d been locked in

here for weeks-at least, I thought so. I’d lost all sense of time. The worst part was that my memories were slowly coming back, bit by bit, and each one hurt more than the last.

I remembered now… I was sold. My own father had sold me off. He wasn’t coming to save me-not

from this place, not from this nightmare.

I had never lived like this before, never gone without a bath, without brushing my teeth, without

even combing my hair.

And the only time I saw anyone was when they shoved a loaf of bread and a bottle of water through the small opening. Sometimes, they forgot even that for days.

I’d grown thin, weak, dirty, and numb. I kept hoping he was just punishing me for a while, that maybe once he’d had enough, he’d let me out. But that never happened. He left me here, alone in this cold, filthy hole, like something worthless.

Even animals lived better than this.

I couldn’t take it anymore. My mind was slipping, breaking apart with every passing hour. I didn’t want to die, but it felt like death was crawling closer every second, whispering to me in the dark.

Quiet sobs escaped my lips, too faint for anyone to hear. “Please… let me go…” I whispered, though.

I knew it was useless.

He couldn’t hear me, not here. This place was far from the main house. No one could. Even if I

screamed until my voice gave out, no one would come.

Just when I was about to give up, I heard footsteps-slow, steady and my head snapped toward the

sound. My breathing quickened, heart pounding as the door creaked open at last.

“Pig? You there? Come here,” came the voice of one of the maids who usually brought my food.

I didn’t hesitate. I crawled toward her on trembling hands and my legs dangling behind me, desperate, broken. I didn’t care anymore who I was-whether I was Bella Maxwell or just some filthy thing left to rot. This place had stripped all that away.

“There you are,” she said coldly, her nose wrinkling. “Well, it’s late, and there’s no one around to

carry you, but for now, the boss says you’re free to leave this place.”

For a moment, I froze, her words echoing in my head. Free.

My lips quivered, the taste of hope too strange after all this time.

Claim

“Oh, don’t start that,” she snapped, scolding me before I could even speak. I bit back the sob that wanted to escape. Even now, I didn’t dare say anything that might upset her, one wrong word and I could end up buried alive in this place.

“So drag yourself out and follow me,” she ordered, turning to walk away.

I obeyed, dragging myself across the rough floor. Every movement sent sharp pain through the

blisters on my palms, my body screaming in exhaustion-but I had to move. I had to get out.

Her footsteps echoed ahead, quick and impatient. I tried to keep up, clawing my way forward, but

she was already far ahead when the first rush of cold air hit me.

I froze. The air outside was so sharp, so real-it stole the breath from my chest. Tears welled in my eyes and spilled down my face before I could stop them.

After so long trapped in darkness, the outside felt like a miracle. I sobbed openly, uncontrollably,

while she barely glanced back.

She didn’t care.

But I did. I was outside again.

I dragged my frail body across the cold ground, my palms scraping against dirt and stone as I

followed her through the darkness. The night was silent except for the faint rustle of trees and the

sound of my dragging. She led me past what looked like the mansion’s backyard, at least, that’s

what I thought it was. Maybe she was taking me to the maids’ quarters. Even that would be better

than the hellhole I had just been in.

But then she stopped.

Her head turned, eyes scanning the shadows, but then she turned her head to look at me. The dim.

light caught her expression-a sneer curling her lips.

“You know,” she said, voice dripping with mock pity, “it’s not just the boss who hates you.”

I stayed silent, too weak and too tired to respond.

“So many people do.”

The sound of approaching footsteps made my blood run cold. Two figures emerged from the dark, their silhouettes tall, their faces hard.

“Shit,” one of them muttered, pinching his nose. “Is this her?”

Clair

My eyes darted toward the maid in confusion. She’d told me Dylan had ordered my release, so who were these men?

“Of course she is,” the maid said casually, pointing at me. “Even though she looks like that, you’re not blind. You can see she’s crippled.”

My throat tightened, “What… what’s going on?” I asked, my voice trembling.

She laughed-a deep, empty sound that sliced through the night. “You actually think the boss would just let you out of that hole? You’re more foolish than I thought.”
