She shook her head, sniffling. Then, after a pause, she whispered the piece of news that made my
heart skip. “Emilia… she’s mated to Alpha Hamilton.”
My mouth went wide. “She is?” I asked, incredulous.
Suzy nodded, and I finally understood. My friend, the girl who had been my companion through so much, had her own sorrows and I was here to help her out too, the best way I could as she had always helped me and had been by my side.
I hugged Sara tightly again, feeling the bittersweet sting of joy and sorrow, as she wailed softly
against me.
The world had moved on while I had been hiding, and I had survived my own storm. But knowing that those around me had theirs, I decided not to dwell too much on mine.
Then and there I made a decision: All things that happened in the past stays in the past never to be
spoken of again.
Including loving Owen, hating him, having his child and giving it away.
Life carried on the way life always does-quietly, stubbornly, without asking if any of us were ready. Two years slipped by before any of us could even properly count them, and one evening Silver Crest Pack finally had an heir. The news spread like wildfire, and the whole pack burst into
celebration.
While the Alpha and his precious family held their extravagant feast inside their golden-lit mansion, the rest of us gathered in the pack square. Music played loud, food was everywhere, people were dancing, drinking, laughing-trying to feel part of something bigger than themselves.
I sat with Suzy that day, watching her smile like she had no troubles in the world. She was already tipsy, swaying with the beat of the music, her cheeks flushed, her eyes sparkling.
“You know what, Aira?” she slurred dramatically, waving her cup. “Fuck all males. Every single one of them. I’ll focus on making money.”
I burst out laughing because she was drunk and talking pure nonsense. This girl.
She still held onto her belief that maybe fate had forgotten her-that maybe she wasn’t destined to have a mate at all. My strong, stubborn friend who felt everything too deeply.
“Or,” I said, leaning closer and nudging her shoulder, “you could pick one from those guys. They’ve been staring at you since we sat down.”

She immediately whipped her head toward the unmated males a few feet away. They were definitely staring, and when she smiled at them, they smiled right back. I laughed so hard my stomach started to ache.
She leaned close to my ear and whispered proudly, “Oh, I’ll be laid tonight.”
I threw my head back and laughed again, wiping tears from my eyes. That was Suzy, bold, hopeless, dramatic, and refusing to be miserable for too long.

She winked at me and practically skipped her way toward the group of guys, leaving me alone on
the wooden bench. The music thumped steadily behind me, people cheered, children ran around
with ribbons, and lanterns swayed in the breeze.
I sighed, tilting my head upward toward the night sky shimmering above the square.
“Welcome, Osborne Cliff,” I murmured softly to myself-the name Alpha Owen had given the new
heir.
“You better not be a weakling like your father. If you are, I just might puke.”
My words dissolved into the cool evening air, and another sigh escaped me as I lowered my gaze again, watching the crowd move and spin with joy. Everyone seemed so happy for his birth.
And then it happened.
A pull. Something deep, ancient, alive.
My breath caught. My body froze without permission. My heart hammered once-hard.
My nose twitched as a scent drifted toward me. A scent I couldn’t ignore, couldn’t push away,
