Book 2:Chapter 7-2

1 lay still on top of him, my ear pressed to his chest, listening to the thunderous rhythm of his

heartbeat.

Slowly, I lifted my head and looked at his face up close.

My gaze drifted to his lips.

How did a man even have lips like that?

His hold loosened, and I realized I could move-could get up.

But instead, acting purely on instinct, I reached out and brushed my fingertips lightly against his

mouth.

The moment stretched.

Then reality crashed back in.

What was I doing?

I pulled away at once and stood up, my heart racing. He looked… stable now. Normal, even.

Should I wake him up?

Julio/Helio

Ever since what happened at the office, Riley had been raging inside me.

“Why didn’t you just mark her?” he snarled.

I understood his frustration-hell, I felt it too-but if we were going to do this right, I couldn’t scare

her away.

“Give me time,” I told him firmly.

He wasn’t having it. “I don’t know about that, Helio. I want to mark her now. There’s something

about her I can’t explain.”

I hissed softly, clenching my jaw. Damn it, I wanted the same thing. The urge to claim her was

eating me alive.

It wasn’t just because she was my mate. I had never felt this kind of pull toward anyone before.

Desire, obsession, protectiveness-all tangled together. My world has always been small,

controlled, predictable. This? This was new. Too new.

I dropped the paperwork on my desk and checked my watch. It was closing time. I leaned back in

my chair with a tired sigh. I didn’t want to leave the office-not because of work, but because the

council meeting awaited me.

I despised every single one of them.

The door opened, and Denver stepped in. “We need to leave now, sir.”

I hissed under my breath and stood. Denver-the watchdog they assigned to me. Their reminder

that I wasn’t trusted. That I was only a substitute.

“I was told to inform you that Eleanor will be there,” he added as we walked out.

I didn’t respond. I didn’t care. In fact, I didn’t want him anywhere near me.

The elevator took us straight down to the parking lots. Guards immediately surrounded us, / escorting us to the car like I was some fragile liability. As I turned my head slightly, I caught sight of Eliot heading toward his own vehicle.

My jaw tightened, and I snapped my gaze forward. Everything irritated me lately-everything.

Soon, we were on the road to meet the council. The people who truly ruled the pack. Not me.

I had no alpha essence. No authority. No power of my own.

Julio and I had been twins, yet it was as though he took everything.

Danae was right. If I claimed Idara now, I wouldn’t be able to protect her. I had no standing to shield her from what would follow. As much as Riley despised the idea, staying away was the only

way I could keep her safe-for now.

When we arrived, I stepped out of the car, leaving the guards behind. Only Denver followed. We entered the elevator, and he pressed the button for the first floor.

I already knew what awaited me.

The moment I walked into the council chamber, they were all seated in their places, a long table

between them. No one stood. No one acknowledged me as alpha. Their eyes followed me with

thinly veiled judgment.

I took my seat-not the alpha’s chair. Never that. The one they assigned to me. Another reminder.

Another insult.

Calisto spoke first. “We have decided it is time for you to marry Eleanor.”

My gaze flicked to her. She sat composed, elegant, her eyes meeting mine briefly before she looked away.

“She will stand by your side,” Calisto continued. “The pack is talking. She must serve as Luna-for

now-to assist with her duties.”

I said nothing.

Claird

Another council member cleared his throat. “We understand this is not what you want, but it is your responsibility as alpha. I trust you understand.” as if they view me as one.

They all nodded in agreement.

So that was it. The reason I was summoned.
