**The City That Drowned in the Sound of Its Own Heartbeat by Erynd Cal DusK 137**

**Chapter 137**

Alpha Samuel Bowers.

Something about this situation feels deeply off. I had a conversation with Alpha Thomas; I even laid eyes on him. So, either he’s an exceptionally skilled liar, pretending to be ill, or he’s completely oblivious to the chaos brewing within his own company.

“Are you absolutely certain about what you witnessed?” I press Kataleya, anxiety gnawing at my gut.

If we storm the company and find nothing amiss, the repercussions will fall squarely on my shoulders and those of my pack.

“Yes, I am sure.” Her unwavering gaze meets mine, filled with determination.

“Damn it, fine. But we must wait until nightfall. I refuse to put innocent lives in jeopardy during our confrontation. We’ll bide our time until the building is completely vacated.” I declare, my voice firm.

“I don’t believe that’s a wise course of action. He’s supposed to send men with them today. If he doesn’t show, they’ll realize something is off.” Kataleya counters, her expression serious.

“I understand that, but you mentioned he usually makes deliveries at night, correct?” I inquire, hoping for a sliver of reassurance.

Reluctantly, she nods, her brow furrowed.

“Good. That gives us a bit of breathing room. Meanwhile, I will dispatch some of my men to keep a watchful eye on the building. If anything unusual occurs, they’ll alert us.” I outline my plan, and she eventually concedes with a nod, though her expression remains tense.

“We are at war, Alpha Bowers. In times of war, casualties are inevitable. You would do well to remember that.” Her words hang heavy in the air.

“I am acutely aware of that fact. Yet, we still possess the element of surprise. The opposing side is unaware of our knowledge. If we charge into that building in broad daylight, we will lose everything we’ve worked for. Now, let’s stop circling this topic and focus on the strategy. How many witches can you spare?” I ask, shifting the conversation to practicalities.

“Combat-ready? I can allocate seven.” She replies, her tone clipped.

“That should suffice for now. We’re not launching a full-scale assault just yet, but seven isn’t enough for a proper war, as you rightly pointed out. You’ll need to prepare your people.” I state, and she shoots me a glare that could cut glass.

“I am well aware of that! Forgive me for not anticipating that The Valkyrie would return, seeking to resurrect a two-thousand-year-old witch.” She snaps, the tension in her voice unmistakable.

“What’s happening in here?” I inquire, moving to stand beside Natalie.

“I was giving Sophia a bath because she got paint all over herself. During the process, my mask got wet, so I had to take it off. After I put the kids down for their afternoon nap, I came down to grab a bottle of water and ran into your brother. He mistook me for Yara and tried to throw me out, so I had to explain everything. I think I may have broken his brain.” She chuckles, and I can’t help but join her, laughter bubbling up in my chest.

“Steven!” I call his name, using my Alpha voice, which snaps him out of his stupor.

“Did you know about this?” He stammers, still trying to process the revelation.

“I had my suspicions for a while, but I only recently confirmed it.” I reply, watching as he nods, still visibly shaken.

“Okay, let me see if I have this straight. Your real name is Natalie Nichols, you are Yara’s twin sister, and six years ago, you had a drunken night with my brother, but you didn’t remember his face due to the alcohol. You discovered you were pregnant and gave birth to quads. Yara stole the first two and attempted to kill you, but you managed to escape. Then she brought those children to Samuel, deceiving him into believing she was their mother and the same woman from that night. Samuel couldn’t see through her lie because she looked just like you and he could sense their bloodline. So now, you’ve returned to reclaim your children, unaware that Sophia and Franklin are the very ones Yara took from you, and to top it off, you find out that the man you spent that night with is my brother, who is also your mate. Is that correct?” He summarizes, his voice incredulous.

“Yeah, that’s about the gist of it.” Natalie confirms, her expression a mix of relief and anxiety.

“Well, fuck…” Steven mutters, grappling with the weight of the truth.
