**Chapter 10**
“How did your first night with the baby go?” Grace inquired, her voice warm and inviting as she stepped into the house later that morning. Her greying hair was neatly arranged in a bun, and she wore her usual cozy sweater paired with slacks that spoke of comfort over fashion. Today, however, there was a new addition—glasses perched delicately on her nose, giving her an air of wisdom.
She leaned down to place a gentle kiss on Emilia’s forehead, her fingers delicately stroking the baby’s cheeks with an affection that radiated warmth. After a brief moment, her attention shifted to Lori, who was looking particularly worn out. The shadows under Lori’s eyes were deep, and her hair hung limply, as if she had skipped a much-needed shower. Grace’s heart ached for her; it was evident that Lori had not enjoyed a restful night.
“She did well. Well, she didn’t sleep much, but she did well,” Lori replied, her voice tinged with exhaustion. She had carefully carried the baby down the stairs, cradled in her arms, and placed her in the comforting embrace of the rockaroo swing that gently swayed. Sinking into the nearest couch, Lori let out a soft sigh, grateful for the brief moment of reprieve.
In her mind, Lori had briefly entertained the thought that Grace might be a live-in housekeeper, but she soon learned that Grace had her own responsibilities, taking shifts alongside Gregory.
Grace, sensing Lori’s confusion, took a moment to clarify the household dynamics. “You know, it’s a bit of a team here at the Caine household,” she began, her tone matter-of-fact yet kind. “Gregory is the oldest staff member; he was hired long before Gabriel took over. He’s like the backbone of this place, managing everything and overseeing the staff.”
Lori listened intently, intrigued by the inner workings of the household. “And Grace, you’re second in command?” she asked, a hint of admiration creeping into her voice.
“Exactly! I supervise the maids and ensure everything runs smoothly. Then we have Antonio, the gardener, who comes three times a week to keep the garden looking beautiful. Tony is our chauffeur; you’ve met him, right? He’s here every day, though most of the time, Mr. Gabriel prefers to drive himself. And then there’s Jeffrey, our security guy; he checks in at least once a week, though I haven’t seen him around lately. Oh, and let’s not forget Jenny and Sylvia, our maids—Jenny cleans, and Sylvia handles most of the cooking.”
Grace’s voice was filled with a sense of pride as she spoke about the team, and Lori couldn’t help but feel a sense of comfort in the structure of the household.
“I hope you at least managed to catch a bit of rest?” Grace asked, her eyes softening as she watched Emilia begin to nod off in her swing, lulled by the gentle motion.
Lori nodded, though she knew it was a stretch of the truth. She did not want Grace to think of her as incapable or in need of assistance. “I did. I don’t usually sleep much at night anyway,” she replied, trying to sound casual.
The truth was that since the labor, peaceful sleep had eluded her. Nighttime had become a battleground of restless thoughts and haunting nightmares that refused to let her be.
As Lori settled deeper into the sofa, feeling a sense of relief wash over her now that Emilia seemed to be drifting off, Grace took a seat beside her. “So, tell me about yourself, Loretta. I realize I don’t know nearly enough about you,” she said, her curiosity evident.
Lori chuckled softly, shaking her head. “There’s not much to tell, Grace.”
“I’d still like to know more,” Grace persisted, her interest unwavering.
