Chapter 214
Lori paused. She turned her head swiftly, waiting for the ball to drop.
Vara finally mustered the strength to stand up. Her knees trembled visibly.
“Sabine may be my alpha… but in the grand scheme of things… I’m nothing to her.”
“What do you mean?”
Lori asked as she narrowed her eyes at her.
Vara sighed. She had been locked in the cell for days and even though she had barely said a noteworthy tangible word or anything that could help them, she had heard everything. Everything that was happening all around her.
Draco wanted Gabriel to give the order to kill her, Gabriel didn’t. They had tried reaching Sabine, all to no avail. No exchange would be made, but Gabriel somehow held on to the hope that he could exchange Vara for Lori’s son.
Vara knew enough of Sabine to know that she would never give up Lori’s boy for her.
“There’s only one thing I can help you with… and it’s this piece of information I’m about to give you.
Lori listened carefully, Vara took a deep breath.
“Your mate is hoping that Sabine will do anything to have me back… n maybe even exchange your son for me.”
“Tell Gabriel that Sabine would never do it.”
Lori shifted uncomfortably… she had suspected it. That that was the only reason Vara was still alive. That they were hoping to use her to get to Sabine but so far Vara wasn’t divulging her secrets and Gabriel wasn’t giving up that easily.
“If she cares so little for you, why are you protecting her?”
Vara shrugged.
Lori noticed the dark circles around her eyes, her face also looked thinner. It was clear she wasn’t eating well, so she looked weak. Weaker than Lori had ever
seen her.
“She’s my alpha. And I’m her beta. It is my duty,”
“A duty that will lead you to your death.”
Lori spat out but Vara didn’t even flinch.
“Then kill me already. Tell Gabriel to kill me
it done quickly! I’m tired of waiting.”
Lori was a bit taken aback by her statement.
There was an uncomfortable silence between the two of them as she pondered on her next choice of words.

Chapter 214
“You’d rather die?!”
Lori whispered and Vara nodded.
“I would.”
Lori shook her head.

She didn’t like Vara and she would never forgive her for what she did to Elliot, but something about her was very pitiful, even slightly pathetic. The fact that she would rather die than reveal the secrets of an alpha who was ready to discard her at the slightest inconvenience.
An alpha who in fact had already discarded her, with no plans of saving her or helping her out.
Sabine didn’t deserve that kind of loyalty. And a small part of her hated that she had that kind of loyalty. If Vara had been born to a better pack, one who’s alpha valued her, perhaps she would have been a better person, a great beta… but no.
Life never took the easy path.
“She doesn’t deserve that.”.
“She doesn’t deserve your unending loyalty. And she certainly doesn’t deserve you.”
Vara shrugged. A single tear fell from her eye. So small that Lori almost missed it. She didn’t think the battle hardened woman ever cried. She didn’t look like the type to cry and Lori certainly never imagined she would see her cry.
“When I think long and hard about it… nobody really deserves anything. I know that I didn’t even deserve to be a beta… I made my fair share of mistakes… I wasn’t perfect…
Lori didn’t stop her. She sighed.
It was hopeless, she thought as her hands fell to her side.
“Well then. If you would rather die… then I guess this is goodbye.”
She turned to leave.
“I didn’t mean to kill him.”
Vara finally confessed.
Lori stopped but didn’t turn back, holding back tears.
“I was sent to kill Lyle. What happened with Elliot… it was a terrible mistake…”
“When I close my eyes… I still see his face.”
